MG MGB Technical - Rear Brake Drum Question
I had a hard time removing one of my '67 MGB brake drums & part of the outer flange broke off!!! I'm thinking I need to replace the drum. Before I spend $120 on a new one: Can I get away with using the drum? Do I need to replace both ??? Thanks for any ideas, Steve

I think the flange only keeps water out.
Stan Best
Steven- The flange reinforces the friction surface of the brake drum in order to prevent distortion and avoid cracking. Replace it!
Steve S.
Wow! is that how much a brake drum for a B cost now?
James
stevenf- I have an old drum kicking around you could have. Probably needs to be turned or maybe you could use it as is. What part of MA are you in? I am in Swansea 02777
Dana Wilson
Dana, Thanks for the offer on the brake drum. I live in Southwick 01077. Let me know how I can get in touch with you. Thanks, Steve

Steve, I'm in North Granby,CT, right on the Granville, Mass line. I've got a couple of drums, too. You can have one. I'll send you an email.

$120 for a brake drum!!? Half that in the UK, even allowing for the exchange rate (a quarter if you don't) and I'm surprised they are that much.

Paul he is talking about the banjo brake drum not the tube. Its cheaper to buy our tube axle brake drums here $40 a pop compared to 34.50 pounds plus shipping UK. But I have got some great prices from england in the past but Ive been nailed on shipping. If It wasnt for the shipping id make out like a bandit. So you only end up saving a little instead of hundreds. Dont even bother calling up for a quote from Fed Ex, they are twice their competitors.

Fair do's James, but still only 40-odd quid here in the UK i.e. $80-$90.
Paul Hunt 2
yea, the prices really have spiked in the last couple of years, you can try and say its the gas prices but you guys in the U.K. would love to be paying what we are paying at this moment.
James
When having items shipped from the UK I have gotten the lowest shipping cost using the UK's Airmail. And yes, I did have a brake drum shipped this way.
John H
Hi Having shipped motorcycle parts to the US from here in the UK, you are fine using UK airmail up to 2kg (known as the small packet rate ) cost is £10.80 for the first kg then approx £1.00 per 100g up to 2kg. This also generally avoids your guys over enthusiastic customs at present (we've lost a couple of items that way I think they blow them up or steal them if they are in a bad mood lol) Anything over 2kg and it is almost always uneconomic Regards Simon

Banjo rear-end? Sorry stevenf, I didn't realize you had a different rear than I do on my 69. Guess I can't help you.
Dana Wilson
Dana, thanks for the offer anyways, Steve in Granville had one 10 minutes from my house. Thanks Steve for your help and advice on other stuff!!!
stevenf
Yes James, I'd love your fuel prices, and your tool prices and all the bits and bobs that we don't seem able to get here any more. But you can keep your parts prices!
