MG MGB Technical - Rear oil seal leaking

The rear oil seal on my 67 B starting leaking badly after I replaced the clutch. I mean oil was literally pouring out. I've removed the engine/gearbox for the second time and removed the flywheel and end plate. The end of the crankshaft has a very fine annular grove in it presumably where the oil seal fits which I assume caused the leak.

Has anyone fitted the improved rear seal sold by Moss and did it work? Or is installing a Speedi-sleeve the only real solution?

Thanks for your advice,

Andy

Go with the Speedisleeve. The wear, on your crankshaft, is just enough to cause a constant leak, no matter what crank seal you use. I somehow doubt that you want to pull the engine a third time. RAY

Hi Andy
Ive fitted a speedisleeve and a standard crank seal, the motor is now dry and hope it remains that way for many miles to come.
I would fit the sleeve on every rebuild now.

Thanks guys, I've ordered a speedi-sleeve which should arrive tommorrow and will fit it per your advice. I have installed one before to another B but can't remember if there are any secrets to doing it. It seemed fairly straight forward as far as I can remember.

Thanks Andy

Hi Andy,

The only tip is to wrap a piece of tape over the edge of the speedi sleeve to stop any chance of nicking the seal. Ask me how I found this out.

Warm the sleeve up and put the crank in the freezer.

Allan the crank is still in the engine and my fridge isn't that big. I assume I can do it with the crank still in the engine otherwise I'll use the upgraded seal.

Hi Andy,

Though heating and freezing sort of makes sense, it isn't really necessary. The sleeve comes with an installation tool, which makes it quite easy to fit.
Also note that a sealer is required, read the instructions with the sleeve carefully.

Hi Herb, thanks for your advice. I read the instructions several times and used a sealant (not an adhesive) per the instructions. It calls for a non setting sealant so I used hylomar which I hope is OK. As you said the installation tool makes the installation quite easy. I also used the upgraded oil seal from Moss (made in England) which comes with a very handy installation sleeve so you don't damage the seal when you install the backplate.

Thanks Andy

If you need a speedi-sleeve; try the folks at the following web site; I bought from them recently; great price! They also stock other speedi-sleeves for MGB application.
