MG MGB Technical - Replacing backplate oil seal

I'm just about to replace the backplate oil seal on my 18V engine. Any advice, cautionary or otherwise?
Richard Coombs

Just rember to lubricate the new seal before you install it. Starting it up dry will cause premature failure. RAY

Make 100% sure the new seal runs entirely in the wear groove left by the old one or entirely out of it - if it is part in and part out then you will have an effective oil pump!

Safest is to leave the new seal proud of the backplate and fit the later (post 1976) type of seal retainer that is shaped to hold the seal in this position - part no 22G1649

Thank you both for the advice.
Chris, does the later retainer fit all backplates? Although my engine is to 18V spec I believe it was reconditioned using an 18GG block so the backplate may (or not) be of an earlier vintage. I haven't had a good look at it yet. Is the part number stamped on it?
Richard Coombs

The later retainer will fit the earlier backplate. RAY

As Ray says - it will fit any backplate but it will not clear the very early flywheel fitted to 18GB engines.

Your engine will have the later, larger flywheel used with the inertia starter motor so will be fine.
