MG MGB Technical - Replacing steering column top bush

As the thread title says, need to replace the bush at the top of the steering column.

Any tips regarding this job?

Iwan,

You need to state the details of your car. Not all the columns are the same.

I had a problem with my upper bush.

Sorry, its a 72' gt.

Hi Dave, I'm afraid I can't seem to open archive thread. What problems did you have. Have not looked to see if I have a solid or collapsible column 72 gt. How do you tell the difference. Ta
Iwan Jones

A 72 GT has the collapsible column. Slacken the steering wheel nut a couple of turns and then twist the wheel from side to side to slacken the taper then centralise the wheel undo the nut and lift the wheel off. Under no circumstance hit the centre shaft down as this will in all probability shear the plastic inserts. Then remove the column shroud. Also remove the spring clip which centralises the trafficators. Now the top bush should be plastic and have a top lip under which circumstances it should then be possible to pry the bush from the column. Reassembly is the reverse.

A UK 72 only changed from the solid to the intermediate collapsible column for 1972, so potentially could have either, e.g. if it was a 71 model only registered in 1972. The change point was chassis number 258001 roadster, 258004 GT. The 72 got rocker switches, console courtesy light instead of map light, might help as unlike the later column the first two were rather similar.

The full energy absorbing that North America got in 67 wasn't on UK 4-cylinder models until rubber bumpers, but V8s always had them.

The link won't work for me, either.

Go to the MGB Technical archive and search on the phrase "steering column squeal"
