MG MGB Technical - Roadster boot lid seal

My 70 Roadster has the boot seal attached to the body which is incorrect and makes the boot lid stand a couple of mm proud at the sides. If I press down on the lid (At the edges) and compress the seal it all lines up. I was therefore thinking of changing the seal for the one that attaches to the lid (AHH7833).
My question is: How is the seal attached to the lid?
I cannot seem to locate a decent picture. Clausager mentions the change and shows a boot lid with the seal on but it does not show any detail. The MOSS catalog etc show the shape of the seal but that does not help either.

Suspect you need the right boot lid. Mine has a channel into which the edge of the seal is inserted. The seal is approx 1/4" X 3/4" rectangular, with the lip for the channel on one of the "short" sides. The longer side sits against the boot lid.

I had the same problem with a '73 a few years ago. It is not the fitting to the body that is the problem - its the quality of seals available.

I found a different supplier for the seal and it sat down exactly as intended - it only takes a slightly stiffer seal to make all the difference.

You definitely require a different lid for the different seal as MB says. Have you tried to move the boot catch to 'pull' the lid down tighter to squash the seal? Of course this will means a bit more effort to close the lid.

Thanks all.
I have no intention of changing the lid so I might try the catch move. Has not got much play and its already a sod to shut so might just have to live with it. Ah weel it's only cosmetic

I can't remember the design of the "aperture" seal, but can you trim it the 2 mm? It will be a sod to do but you will only see any imperfections with the boot open: whereas now it shows (a bit) all the time! I have used a serrated breadknife to trim rubber seals before. Slowly.....

I once replaced the bootlid on my car with an earlier model lid which had the seal on the lid.I just removed the seal & chiselled off the spot welded channel that held it. The replacement lid worked fine with the original seal on the boot opening. You can get a bit of adjustment with the boot hinges & the catch mechanism.I remember having to shim a catch fitting on a GT with washers to get a tighter fit. Also the pawl on the catch might be worn too much to close the lid enough. Barrie E
