MG MGB Technical - Roadster exhaust mounts

I've just bought some new rear exhaust rubber mounts (GEX7493) and some insulator washers (AHC442). From the composition it looks like the washers are a heat insulator. They come with the flat faces coloured green on one side and black on the other. Has anyone experience of these and what the colours are supposed to indicate? Maybe 'hot side' and 'colder side'?

Is one stud longer than the other as shown by Leacy? If so put them whichever way round is best/easiest. The ones I've always had have been symmetrical as far as I can remember and certainly not coloured. That far back there is relatively little heat in the exhaust, especially with the rubber mounts being between the clamp round the tail-pipe and the body bracket.

Paul, I'm happy with the place the washers go and which way round to fit the rubbers. It's the significance of the green/black faces on the washers that has me beat. Like you say, there isn't that much heat here but MG decided to insulate with these washers placed between the rubbers and the mount.

The colour is simply an artifact of the manufacture of the sheet of material from which the washers are punched. Doesn't matter.

Thanks FRM, I'll go with that. However, it really is a strange idea to make the two sides different if it doesn't matter.
Richard Coombs

Sheet goods typically have one side identified by overall colour, or printing. It may or may not matter in some application of that material, or it may be simply a result of the production process, ie, keeping track of which way it went down the line, which might help quality control etc. These washers are certainly not the only or even major use of the material. They appear to be a form of phenolic composite, sometimes known as "Formica", "Micarta", etc. These often have one or both sides faced with a surface unlike the base material. Quite possibly, if you have enough of them, you will find some that do not have the second colour, if it is printed identification.

Didn't read carefully enough. Neither of my cars came with washers there, just the rubbers and brackets. They don't seem to have suffered because of the omission.
