MG MGB Technical - Rubber Bumper Skin Fixing Rivets

As one of my winter projects, I'm planning to refurbish the front bumper armature on my 1976 roadster. To refix the bumper skin I will need new rivets - Part No CHA307. These seem very expensive and some of the suppliers are charging £1 a rivet! I need 28 of them That's quite a lot of money for what they are and I'm sure you can buy them a lot cheaper than that.

Does anybody know if these armature rivets are a special size, or indeed what size they are?

Thanks

Might be an idea to buy one, then look for similar from a fastener supplier.

Andy, search the archives on here for 'rubber bumper' - I posted info regarding sourcing of these rivets in Aug.2012.

I just found the receipt for the ones I used - 4.8 x 28 Alu pop rivet, 60 off for £2.23 + vat (this was in 1999).

Screwfix do packs of 250 rivets (4.8 x 25) for £20, enough for about 4 bumpers.

The original rivets are 3/16" x 1".

I can never get this archive to work. I Googled 'rivet cha307 size' and found the thread that way, but even then knowing the title etc. the only thing archive came up with was this thread and not the original! By that time I could see Brian had replied with sizes.

Thanks everybody. I have ordered some 4.8 x 27mm aluminium pop rivets for £10 for a 100, so saved a lot of money and will have more than enough to do both bumpers.

Seasons greetings

As far as I recall, the original rivets were steel, not soft aluminium. Our local MG workshop used to take the bumpers round to a firm who built commercial vehicle bodies; they had some monster hydraulic machine capable of closing the rivets. They also need a fairly large flange to bear properly on those clamp strips.

Some years ago I got some suitable rivets, not steel but at least some alloy much stronger than DIY store aluminium ones, from a local specialist supplier - who has since closed unfortunately.

Tap the holes and use bolts instead.
