MG MGB Technical - Seal - Bonnet - Foam BHH2270

Hi can somebody point me to a picture where I can see how the
Seal - Bonnet - Foam BHH2270
is installed?

That is just the square section foam strip? It just lies in the channel at the base of the screen, just behind the rubber seal on the lip of the channel, see attached. Until I looked up the number I thought you were asking about the two-piece seal that goes between the radiator and its mounting panel.

Hi Paul

thank you that's exactly it.

I guess it's missing on many cars ... maybe a good idea since it might collect humidity and cause that area to rust?

Hi Thomas, I have the same piece of rubber/foam. It's a good question about corrosion. I can't remember if my car had this when I stripped it down 4 years ago so I would be very interested in whether to fit the new one or not. Anyone have any experience, good or bad of using this item? Is there aproblem if it's not fitted?
Richard Coombs

This was fitted from about 1970 on. Early cars had 4 of the rubber "bumpers" in the bonnet rain channeks, later cars had the seal arrangement where the upper pair of bumpers were. My car lets water in in heavy rain and Im sure it overflows where the top bumper obstructs the channel and eventually gets onto my feet via the pedal box. Im sure this change was to prevent this. So far no corrosion problems in this area but it hasnt done much for my shoes over the years. Why dont I change it? Well it wouldnt be original any longer and wouldnt make the car go faster.

Actually I ordered that that rubber foam a long time ago because I found it in the MGC parts catalogue (so it must have been fitted to cars before 1970 as well), realised it wasn't there on my car and anyway it was cheap, but then I never fitted it because I wasn't quite sure where it was supposed to go.

What's the purpose of that foam? prevent rattling of the bonnet? channel the water flow? ... ?
Thomas Nussbaumer

Although I've got both, having fitted the foam seal relatively recently as I happen to have a length, looking in the Parts Catalogue the story is completely different. That says the foam seal was used *prior* to the rubber seal, which started in Nov 67 with the Mk2, i.e. it's either/or. Maybe the foam seal compressed over time and allowed the bonnet to rattle, or mouldered away and allowed hot air and fumes into the cabin via the heater intake, or absorbed water and was a rust trap.

Paul do you want to say it's either
- Seal - Bonnet - Rear Channel BHH2270
or
- Seal - Bonnet - Rear Lip BHH209?

which isn't clear from the catalogues I have got, but that would explain why I didn't have that foam, since it is a 1969 car.

Thomas Nussbaumer

Indeed, foam BHH2270 on Mk1 cars i.e. up to Nov 67, rubber BHH209 after that.
