MG MGB Technical - Seat Belts

http://www.ssnake-oyl.com/

Have any of you had seat belts repaired by Ssnake-Oyl in Tyler Texas? If so, what was your experience? I have two 1974 MGBGT's (one is a project, the other is a parts car) and a 1971 Roadster. Both of the GT's have the factory seat belts but they could stand to be repaired/restored. The Roadster has a set of retractable belts from Moss (after market, non original, of course)that have never worked right. Right now, I am looking at two options. both would include Ssnake-Oyl or a similar company. (1) send both sets of GT belts to Ssnake-Oyl and attempt to adapt one set to fit the Roadster. (2) I know where there is a rubber bumper Roadster (a stripped and rusting hulk setting out in a field and I don't know the year model) that has a set of factory retractable belts. These look like they might mount in the same spot as the Moss belts. Do any of you have any other ideas or suggestions?

Thanks

Had the retractable seat belts for my 71 E Type done by them a year or two ago and am very happy with the results.

I have an 80LE with a mixed pair; one original Kangol and another by Securon which is what you likely have if you purchased from Moss. The Securon replacement was difficult to pull out and often wouldn't retract. I "googled" Securon and found the installation instructions. The knobs with arrows need to be oriented properly. They worked fine for me after I learned how to orient the arrows.

I don't know the company that you're referring to about repairing your belts, but there is another fellow called "Strapping Lad" that offers to renovate seat belts.

Larry,

Thanks. I am probably going to send them one set and see what happens.

Rick,

You are right. I have the Securon belts in the roadster and you are right in that the arrows have to be properly oriented. My problem is that they don't stay that way. They tend to move and the retractors lock. The belts also tend to twist and jam. And, of course, the retractors are under the top when it is down and you can't get to them of adjust the arrows.

Again, Thanks for the input.

Those arrows on the Securon belts..not many know it, but you loosen the phillips screw to get the arrows right, then tighten the screw..it shouldnt move, and you won't have any problems.

Ssssnake-Oyl has a good reputation and has been in business a long time.

The Strapping Lad (Rusty Koester of Las Vegas) is also an upfront businessman. I purchased rebound straps for my GT fom him.

What about the magnetic type kangol belts? My problem is that I have a good set of hardware from belts that dont fit my car, and I have some ratty old belts with bad hardware that does fit my car. I need some place that will use the old belts as a patern along with the new hardware I provide, AND even refurbish the good hardware just a bit.

Seth,
You really need to post a picture of that belt so that the rest of us can appreciate "ratty" seat belts...

dave i want to thank you for paying them the complement of actually calling them seat belts. Not everyone is so generous!

Mack: I had my seat belts re-webbed by Ssnake-Oyl about two years ago. They did excellent work. I sent my original hardware for new belt material. They polished the metal bits and worked the plastic parts to bring the belts to as close to "factory new" as they could be. And all for what I considered a reasonable price.
