MG MGB Technical - Sill woes

Hi everyone, spent the day trying to remove the sills on the B. Apart from the usual i found that preious owners had put new inner sill sections straight over the old ones which made it fun. I managed to remove them but now im stuck at the rear of the outer sill. It looks like the top of the rear outer sill is sandwiched between the inner sill and part of the interior panelling. Is this normal? How do i remove the sill section without cutting up the rest of the car?

Thanks

I think it is normal, well that's the way it was on mine. I think you are on the right track drilling the welds out. Then next if I remember correctly I bent up the body panel to get access to the outer sill and then the same method or drilling out any remaining welds. It is a really pain in the ****. Another way would be to leave the top of old outer sill in position and cut the new one to overlap and then weld in position.

It is 100% normal and a right bast** to get out without doing a fair bit of damage.
My preferred approach is to use an angle grinder to cut out as much of the sill as you can reach then drill all the spot welds. I then use a sharp bolster chisel to split the welds and remove the remains of the sill. The real bugger is the small bit of mig/oxy weld used on the final inch of the sill/inner that you can't see!!! This bit will test your resolve to work out how best to separate it without wrecking either the inner panel or the inner arch.... Just accept you will need a very sharp chisel and lot of patience :-)

Just takes time and patience! These pics from doing mine might help. Be prepared to do a bit of stitching though. Will upload another.

Second...or should be first pic!! After all the "unpicking".

Yes, I remember doing that at both ends of the sill. A royal pain!

thanks everyone. I'm getting there slowly.
