MG MGB Technical - Spare wheel clamp

Anyone tell me how long the spare wheel clamp for Wire wheel is? I have just got one from fleabay which said it was for WW but at 16cm I reckon it's for Rostyles

Funnily enough the drawing shows the Rostyle one is longer than the wire wheel one, although you can't always go by drawings. I never had a clamp with my roadster, so didn't notice any problem when changing from Rostyle to wires. I don't have the old Rostyles handy to compare the length needed, but from the top of the carpet over the boss in the boot floor it is 16.5cm to the upper face of the wire wheel hub, and you are going to need at least 1cm more than that.

The top of the two clamps are shaped differently, the wire wheel one has a flat strip rivetted to the top of the disc that presses down on the hub, whereas the strip on the Rostyle one is shaped more like a flat letter 'M'. The Rosrtyle disc is almost flat, whereas the wire wheel disc is deeply dished.

Thanks.
I guess it's a Rostyle one then :(

What size tyres (width) are you running?

I've got standard tyres on wires and the clamp engages no more than about three threads.

My tyres?

Good degree of thread engagement -certainly much more than a few threads.

Roger - sorry, I was referring to the OP's wheel.

I'm thinking mine's probably the wrong one, but it does the job, just!
John Bilham

I thought I had the wrong hold-down for my wire spare. It turned out that there was a dent, increasing the distance a tad from the captive nut to the top of the hub.

'Screwed the hold-down in to catch as many threads as possible (with wheel out of trunk) and pulled up the dent.

'Works fine, now.

Dan - interesting. I'll have a look at mine.
