MG MGB Technical - SS exhaust

Time to put a new exhaust on the 67 BGT. Going to go with stock system but in stainless. I see a few on the market with Moss and Victoria British. Also see a SS Bell system on Ebay.

Appreciate any feedback on SS systems others have on their cars.

I have a stainless on my 1978 MGB and a stainless on my 1969 MGC.

LOVE them!

Sourced the MGC up in Canada back in 1996...sourced the MGB through Moss.

I also have stainless headers, down pipes, and crossover pipes on the V8. I had them ceramic coated as well. (This photo is pre-ceramic coating.)

I've had the Falcon Big Bore stainless steel exhaust system on my '67 Tourer for almost 20 years. I highly recommend it. It eliminates the center muffler, but uses a slightly larger rear muffler. It still looks and sounds like it did the day I installed it. The increased road clearance is a plus and it is much quieter than the Moss Tourist Trophy system, which I installed on a customer's '72 GT. Don't get me wrong, the TT system is a good bargain and is well engineered. It's also highly polished, but only someone working under the car will notice. It's simply too loud for my taste. Every time I hear that GT coming, I cringe. RAY

Bruce - sooo much cheaper in the long run. Get stainless clips too.

Has anyone dealt with Engle Imports out of Kalamazoo MI? They do business on E-bay as Britishpartsplace.

They are listing a Bell stainless system with lifetime guarantee for $303 including shipping.

Specks appear to be similar to the ones Moss and VB have. Bell appears to be a UK company. So any input from the UK group on this system? See a few posts on it on The MG experience, all pretty positive.

I buy from Engel. I got a Bell SS system from them for my CGT. Looks great, fit great, sounds great (at least in the garage -- the car isn't on the road yet so I can't comment on how it sounds in real use or longevity.) I'd buy another one.

I found the sound very disappointing with mine, but then I was stuck with it! It wasn't until many miles and years later when I had crushed the middle box a bit that it started to sound better with a bit of a rasp, but still not much like the 'drainpipe' sound of the MGB you can hear from some distance. That's on the 4-cylinder, the one on the V8 is fine. I enquired about a stainless for another car (that sound wasn't an issue with) but the fitter said he didn't know of one for that car and in any case he didn't like them as they make the car sound 'farty', and that described it to a T. YMMV.

Well, I was given a complete system from a newer MGB (rubber bumper) that I have on the car now and it is so much quieter than the one that was on my 67 that I am unsure I know what a normal sound is.

My old one was not factory, it was a walker aftermarket.

I've had more exhaust systems on my B than you can shake a stick at! It originally came with a Monza system that sounded OK, but was a very poor fit. I eventually replaced it with a stock 5 piece system that lasted only a year due to minimal ground clearance. They both sounded alright, but were nothing special. I then had Midas put a '68 model system on. It consists of the down pipe and two mufflers that have the connector pipes integral with the mufflers. I went through so many systems that Midas was begging me to get rid of the car as the mufflers had a lifetime warranty. I finally installed the Falcon Big Bore system in '93 and it sounds great. Not too loud, but not too quiet either. The Moss Tourist Trophy system is a work of art, but it is simply way too loud. RAY

I'm running the Falcon BB on my B -- installed it in 1995. Initially it sounded great but over the years and miles it's gotten louder & louder. I looked into buying another but the price has gone up considerably since 1995! The reports I've read about the B Tourist Trophy system say that it's high quality, fits well, and loud. I don't want (too) loud.

Just for giggles I tried repacking my old muffler as described by Barney Gaylord here:
http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/carbs/ex103.htm

Barney considers it a failed experiment because the new packing blew out after 10k miles. But at my yearly mileage, that's 2-3 years. I can live with repacking every few years.

I did run into an issue in that the plug I used blew out. So I fashioned a crude strap to hold it in.

All my MGs now have SS on them:
B -- Falcon BB
CGT -- Bell stock replacement
TD -- Moss TT
