MG MGB Technical - static timing
Have a static timing question...and need the experts to ste this one to rest...Is it 10 or 6 BTDC static on my 74 mgb?...It's date of mgf is 10.73 and its a de-smoged all original with a 25d-41491 dizzy...The marked dynamic value is 11 BTDC at 1500rpm...and Haynes suggests 10 static...while all my reading on line suggests 6 BTDC static...I suspect its 6 BTDC static if the dynamic is 11 BTDC at 1500 rpms...Please comment, thx... |

Leyland Workshop Manual says 10 degrees for 72 model year cars, 6 degrees for 73. However 72 model year cars have the 41370, and 73s have the 41491, which is perhaps where the confusion has come from. So 41491 is 6 degree static. But you would only be using static if you don't have a timing light, dynamic timing renders static timing uneccessary, except possibly for diagnostic purposes. 41491 has 11 degrees at 1500 rpm, 41370 16 degrees. |

Ah...a definitive source!...Thank you kindly Mr. Hunt...I will amend this evening...I pulled the dizzy and replaced the vacuum capsule and want to get all back to normal...thx |

My pleasure. Did you check the new capsule before fitting by sucking on it and making sure it moved, but didn't pass any air? I'd strongly advise it - Hunt's Fifth Law clause 2: "New parts can be faulty when you receive them". |

Yes indeed...my dad was an old school mechanic...and taught me to approach new parts with caution...It did articulate and I even aplied a mild continuous vacuum to make sure...I set 6 btdc last night and all seems very fine...thx very much... |

A capsule passing air? Fairly bawdy group here. |

Then I will avoid any discussion of greasing our nipples JT... |
