MG MGB Technical - SU Linkage question

HI,

I was wondering if anyone knows where I can get a peice of the linkage that attaches to the choke cable bracket. I originally had a piece that was attached and held the cable in place while the inner cable ran down to the choke spindle. I cannot find it and was wondering where one can source one.

Look at the factory workshop manual or a copy of the Moss Motors or Victoria British parts manuals. Then, identify the year of your vehicle (they used different types of carbs and linkages over the years) and, as close as possible, verify that you do have the correct SU HS-4 or HIF-4 carbs for your model year. A lot can change over the years and I have seen various vehicles with the "wrong carbs" installed, all of which seemed to run fine.

When you have identified the year and the type of carbs, look at the illustration for that set up and identify what part you are missing by name and illustration or part number. List this information and we can direct you to a source for said part.

HI Les,

Been there done that on the Moss Website.. They are HS4's. Just wondering if anyone has had any luck going to say home depot or Lowe's etc... If I find a diagram with a part number I will let you know. Its a generic piece. I just read my initial post and realize how vague it was.
JRB Mr

Hi, try the Berlin site www.sucarbs.co.uk they have full exploded diagrams. Some of the parts more unlikely to need replacing are missing the part numbers but you should be able to reference the missing one for others to assist.

Seems I was looking for part number 44 in this diagram... I have all the other corresponding parts.

I was under the assumption that the choke cable came in from the top and pulled up. But this diagram seems to show it to be different. Can anyone shed some light on the subject?

I have part number 42 the abutment. Not sure how that works.

I found a pictures on the internet of my setup. http://en.allexperts.com/q/MG-Car-Repair-3786/2010/6/Choke-cable-connection-dual.htm If you scroll down to where it says Answer, that is the pic I am referring to.

HS-4 carbs have the choke cable coming up from the bottom. HIF-4 carbs have the choke cable coming from the top.

With the HS-4 setup, it is a bizarre piece of engineering I must say.

The moving part of the cable (ie the inner core cable) is fixed, and the static part of the cable (the outer sheath) is what applies movement to the choke. Seems illogical, but it works.

The part you need is easily obtained - they are cheap so buy a few in case you lose any bits in subsequent dissassembly!

"Seems illogical, but it works."

True, but you do have to ensure the cable has a clear run and doesn't significantly foul anything when either pulled or released. You also have to ensure that when half-pulled the lever on the choke interconnecting shaft is at a right-angle to the outer, for best results. If it is too far one way or the other it can make for a hard pull to start it or you can't fully pull it. That applies to the more conventional inner acting on the lever on later carbs from above as well.

Hi,

Yea seems its just a captive nut, I can fashion something for the meantime if I have to.

Thank you for all the help. It does seem a bit illogical hence me trying to wrap my head around what turns out to be a very simple part, has anyone seen such a setup on any other type of car? Just curious...
JRB Mr

Not illogical at all: you are only concerned with the <difference> in motion between the inner and outer cables. On some applications, like your parking brakes or some bicycle calipers, both inner and outer move at the same time.
