MG MGB Technical - su maniflold crack

I was taking the su carbs apart to work on the heat shield and dropped the su intake manifold. It was from less than 1 foot but I can see some hairline cracks on the flange. This is on the side that fits to the heat shield and then the spacers, not the manifold side. Does this mean I need a new intake manifold? Needless to say I am kicking myself. Thanks for your help. Seems like I go from one problem to another. Karl

Hello Karl,
If the crack is radially to inlet, I would say yes or as it is Al have a welder fixing it. Or look on e-B.., good used ones are between $15-... .

Karl. What it means can only be determined by testing on the engine. Cracks which go all the way through, thus causing an air leak, would be a problem. Cracks which exist only on the surface, but do not cause an air leak, are not a problem.

I have never dropped an intake manifold, nor have I seen any one that had cracked from a drop of less than one foot. Nor, do I have the ability to examine yours to see what you are referring to.

Thus, I would recommend that you determine the flange thickness (there were two--one for the HS and one for the HIF series carbs)) before you reinstall the intake manifold. With this number noted in the back of my factory workshop manual, along with the model year of the car, I would install the intake manifold, install the gasket between the manifold and the pheonelic (sp) spacer using some "High Tack" gasket compound on the manifold side, and install the carbs on the intake manifold.

It, after testing (such as spraying some carb cleaner around the joints) it turns out that the cracks actually cause an air leak, knowing the thickness of the flanges will allow you to purchase the proper intake manifold from any number of sources. (I use Bob and Gil Schaulin at "the MG wrecking yard in Arizona.)

But, if there are no air leaks, you have nothing to worry about right now.

Mind posting a picture of it? Does the crack go all the way through the manifold? If not you can try some hi tack gasket sealant. That stuff will seal up just about anything.

James I will try. Karl
