MG MGB Technical - Sump flange

I noticed that sump flange on my engine needed a bit of work before fitting. The area around the bolt holes was raised - I banged it down using a hammer and dolly and dressed with a file. The new Payen sump gasket looks a little thicker than what came off - is this the case?

I had to do some similar work on the sump flange. The thin gauge steel distorts quite easily when tightening the sump bolts, be careful not to overtighten these. How thick is the Payen gasket? The original gaskets from my car were about 50 thou. Aftermarket gaskets are often thinner - the one I got from Moss is 30 thou but it's been ok; I applied a thin coat of Hylomar blue to the sump flange and placed the gasket onto this and pressed it down with a flat piece of wood. This held the gasket in place while I refitted the sump. I didn't put Hylomar between gasket and block because this would make it messy to remove the sump next time. Check the archives for suggested torque settings for sump bolts (I acquired a small torgue wrench and I think I set it at 5lb/ft).

Personally I've always used a sealant. Using "gu" helps keep the oil in without over-tightening. Remember going to a Leyland showroom with my dad looking at Rover 213 and 216's. The 216's had the oil stain under them. The 213's were dry and Honda of course. Honda used silicone!!
If you use silicone gasket gu, DON"T spread too much and put it only on the outer edge. I've removed sumps and found great "globs" of silicone/hylomar etc., on the pick up strainer.

I hate the standard forms of silicone on the market today. I use The Right Stuff, which isn't cheap but does an excellent job of sealing anything. My other favorite standby is Hondabond, aka 3M Bond. RAY

On a long (like the sump flange) or complex surface silicone can start to go off at the beginning before you reach the end. Use a non-setting sealant like blue Hylomar or Loktite flange sealant.

Hondabond is very forgiving. You can put parts together after a minute or let them sit for over an hour before assembling them together. It's amazing stuff and the only sealant used on motorcycles. RAY
