MG MGB Technical - Sunvisor Rubber Clips / Holder

I have a 1980 mgb. The visor clips are stretched and worn out. I have the new clips, but was wondering if I should try to tackle it myself. Are they just held on with traditional rivets, and can I drill them out carefully and just install the new ones? Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks,

Jason

Hi Just drill out old rivets and pop on with new rivets.

That's what I did,

A rubber band will do a short term fix. Just rap around the visor end.

My (cheap) pop rivet tool wouldn't get deep enough into the rubber clips to pull the rivet head tight. After exhausting that attempt, I simply put in self tapping metal screws. Worked well.

Jason, I had the same problem, ordered new rubber clips. Carefully drilled out the heads of the pop rivits, filed the burrs off, put a small dap of black RTV and used a very small sheet metal screw. Its been almost 2 months and so far no problems. Hope this helps...Charlie

Riveters can go deeper than you might guess. You can put washers or a rigid short piece of tubing on the tool end of the rivet, so that the rivet sticks out from your rivet gun a little farther. Even a cheap rivet gun can be 'cheated' in this way to get a little extra reach.

Thanks all. I am going to attempt it. Just a bit nervous obout cracking the windshield.

Sam,

Not a bad idea, except that even a small extension caused my riveter not to grip the shank of the pull rod.

Got it. They do make them in different lengths. But that's another trip to the hardware store...
cheers.
Sam

Did the same on mine, including the base rivets. Got one too long or the windshield was positioned too high. Guess what, it cracked, had to replace, ground off the back end of the rivet some, and repositioned the w/s. No cracks in two years.

The rubber clips holding my sun visors will not hold very well
They keep dropping down.
Has anyone have a good fix for this without buying new clips?.
Bill Mason

Wrap some black insulation tape around the rod.Nobody will see it.

Is there room to put a magnets in them to act as the main or secondary holding?
Nigel Atkins

Be careful when drilling out the old rivets. If you hit the edge of the glass with the drill bit, you’ll be installing a new windscreen. I have a friend that did this.

Nigel. Not sure what type of metal the windshield is made of but my magnet will not attach to it.
Possibly aluminum ?? Thanks Bill
Bill Mason

Sorry Bill I meant put magnets in the rubber stay brackets to help the stay brackets act hold the metal rod end of the visors, the magnets acting as the main or secondary holding.

I hope this makes sense(?).
