MG MGB Technical - Suspected Water Pump Failure??

I've got a fine mist of "brown" coolant being thrown up onto the underside of the bonnet and inner wings with a fairly concentrated coating on the Silicon Coolant Pipes.

This morning I washed all the dried on brown off the panel work, pipes and block then using compressed air I blew all the clean water away from the vicinity so that it was "dry".

I started the engine back up again and let it run for a few minutes to get some temperature back in the water.

There is a fine spray of water being thrown up by the water pump pulley, can I assume that the bearing seal for the propeller shaft has failed and I simply need to replace the water pump.

Or is there something a little more serious that I'm missing here?

TIA

Check your top hose and theromstat first. My pump was brown and wet so I changed it. Still wet, it was a pinhole in the thermostat housing squirting on to the pulley.

Andrew,
try, let it dry and then follow the droplets residue back to source by their reducing size, CSI style

The best way to track down a leak is to use a cooling system pressure tester. It pressurizes your entire cooling system and has a gauge that registers in psi. You'll quickly find the source of your coolant leak with one. Any service center, worth its salt, will have one and it should take less than 5 minutes to narrow down your problem. I've had one for over 30 years and it has paid for itself many times over. RAY

With a little creativity you can make a pressure tester with a radiator cap, a metal tire valve stem (the kind that's threaded the full length) and a bicycle pump.

I'll second the pressure tester idea. I made one up out of a few spare bits and a foot pump and soon found the leak.
