MG MGB Technical - telescopic rear dampers

I have these fitted to my '68 roadster and was wondering what I need to replace them with as and when they need replacing. I haven't taken them off and tested them yet. I have no idea what make they are as they are pretty rusty. It looks like they were originally orange coloured. The only ones I have seen are adjustable ones in the conversion kits.

Hello Steve,

Orange: usually KONI and you can find model number stamped.

For his IRS kit John Hoyle uses Gaz dampers - 36 adjustable click positions. I think they are excellent on my car. Some people have reported that Spax are often too stiff.
Mike Howlett

I have taken one off now. No numbers stamped in casing. Quite rusty anyway. Damper action is very stiff when extending damper, quite a lot less stiff when compressing. Should the rates be the same? Or is the damper faulty?
Steve Church

One more clue. The damping is adjustable by twisting one half of the damper when in the fully closed position. This only seems to adjust the extending force not the compressing force.
Steve Church

Yes, dampers have different compression and rebound rates. I think Konis adjust that way, but if they are still giving damping they are probably fine. Usually they get flabby with age and a click up may make them usable for thousands more miles. The Spax are yellow with a black plastic sheild tube, they adjust with a grub srcew near the lower eye. I put some on our car but would just stick with lever arms today.
