MG MGB Technical - Transmission mount bolts

I'm in the process of mounting a O.D. trans into my '77 and the bolts that hold the mount to the cross member are really dificult to get to.

Everything is nice and clean, new rubber mounts and bolts lubricated etc.

The trans is from a '68 and newer gear box.

Anyone have a good answer?

I'm surprised no-one has chipped-in already, this is oft-mentioned and there have been some methods given in the past. Haven't had to do it myself yet so can't recall the detail, but have you tried assembling the cross-member to the gearbox first and then raising it to bolt the cross-member to the chassis rails? The other thing I seem to recall is drilling some holes in the cross-member near the centre so you can get to the bolts above.

I found the modification detailed at http://www.kewengineering.co.uk/upgrades4mgs/Engines/modifying_the_gearbox_cross.htm to be very efective. The same modification is detailed in many places and no doubt in the archives here.

The modifications to the cross member were also made by the factory, on the later RV8s: makes the job a lot easier!

Great!
Thanks folk's.

Wonder how big a drill bit I can go?

I did the mod on my car and it helps plenty. The hole needed
has to be large enough to allow your socket to pass through
(this will vary according to your socket brand/mfg).

I also remember that it helped me to begin by threading in the
bolts by hand on the left (port) side of the car, first, then
work your way to the right (starboard) side.

Do not tighten any of the bolts until you've got them
all in as you will have to tweek the crossmember
here and there to line up all the holes.

Here's a picture of the crossmember after it has been modified. Doing this will GREATLY simplify hooking up the rear transmission mounts.

Here's yet another view of the modification.

Thanks Tom
The O.D. trans is far harder than the standard.

I will let you all know.

I just did this mod on a cross-member and used a 1/2" drill bit (largest I had).

Although you can't get the socket through the hole, an extension will fit and you can attach the socket on the inside of the cross-member. Obviously, a drill bit bigger than 1/2" will solve the problem.

Takes all of 10 minutes to make the modification.....and a world of joy once it's done.

I made this mod on my racecar and used a 2" holesaw for the access holes. You only need to slot one of the mount holes
