MG MGB Technical - Transmission question

Will the three syncro transmission from a 67 B work on the newer motors, say a 75 B. What I am doing is putting a B motor in a MGA. The engine on the 67 is bad with no compresion but I have a 75 engine that is good. I have alreaddy changed the rear part of the 67 transmission to the rear part from a 60 MGA trans. but I want to use the 75 B engine and need to know if the trans will work on the 75 engine.

There are a number of differences - flywheel, backplate, starter motor, etc.

I'm not even sure that a 5-bearing engine will fit in an A. I could be wrong, but I thought the 3-bearing engine was favoured - or maybe you just need the 3-bearing sump?!

Might be worth posting on the MGA board, as I'm sure there are a few people on there who have already done the conversion.

George,

a good friend of mine has done it and given a report on his homepage. Just have a look here

Sorry, Geore,

I just checked the page I told you and the information upon his engine and gearbox swap on the 1960 A is no more present there. You can contact Andreas Pichler via his page and he will sure give you his experience with the details needed.
Just tell him Ralph Siebenhaar has told you that he knows what has to be done to fix your swaps.

The '65 to '67 B 3 synchro transmissions had the increased diameter input shaft that is the same as that of the 4 synchro trans. If you use the backing plate, from the '67 engine, it's a bolt in operation. Remember that your tachometer is cable driven on the 3 main bearing engine. You'll have to convert to a later electronic tach. This can be done by simply installing a later tach in an early housing. RAY

Thanks for the info. Now I have to make a decision as to rebuild the 67 or change the backing plate.

You will also have to change the front plate so you can use the correct engine mountings
