MG MGB Technical - Tube to banjo conversion

I am planning to add lightness to my car by fitting the earlier banjo type axle in place of the later and heavier tube type axle.
Looking at the parts list I see that the U bolts are a different part number and that the plates that go above and below the springs are different parts numbers.
Can any one tell me in what way the parts are different?

Because the banjo is thinner the ubolts and the plates and the bump stop plates have the holes in a different place.
Because the banjo was only put on the roadster,If you put 7 leaf gt leaf springs on your car the u bolts will be too short in length to fit.
You will have to get the tube ones and bend them in the vice.

I will be following this thread with interest, as I'm planning the same conversion on one of my cars.

I did this almost 36 years ago to my late production '67. The original owner had a pinion seal fail and drove the car without any oil in the diff. When I got the car the gear whine was noticeable, but I lived with it for almost 2 years. I finally came across an early production '67, fitted with the banjo axle, and was able to pick it up as a parts car for $100. The rear axle was a simple swap, but you will need a shorter drive shaft. I'm still using parts from that car today. They're better quality than what's available new. I've never had to replace a seal, bearing or thrust washer on this axle. It is an extremely well designed unit and I prefer its design to that of the tube axle. RAY

This conversation is killing me. I just realized that I let one of these go with a parts car for $200, and I probably could have gotten the same or near price if I had pulled the rear before I let it go.

Doh!

Yes I know about the shorter prop shaft. I bought one on ebay and am waiting for it to arrive. Its the same as the one used on a banjo car with non overdrive 3 sync box.

My interest is in the interchangability of the other parts that hold the axle to the spring.

I guess that if I measure the casing diameters I will get an idea of how different the parts are.
