MG MGB Technical - UK engine paint & gasket sealant

Hi,

Can anyone recommend an (available in the UK)
a) engine paint and b) engine gasket sealant.

Thanks
Iwan Jones

Paint, I can't help you on, but Hylomar is a great gasket sealant. RAY

POR15 from Frost.co.uk is excellent paint. But a bit pricey. i used oldsmobile gold as i have a gold seal engine.

i have also found MGOC engine paint does a good job. one coat only needed.

I second Hylomar.

Paint - use Hammerite smooth black available in rattle cans at Halfords or chassis black from Toolstation. For maroon paint then VW Gambia red again from Halfords.

The engine surfaces do not get hot enough to warranty special heat resisting enamel.

POR-15 is so overhyped it is ridiculous. It is nothing special. The engine paint is just enamel.
If you are down to clean metal, get some 2 part epoxy paint. Some brands require no primer, which is the kind I use on wire wheels after sandblasting. Should work well on an engine. Generally you can color it (have it colored) any way you want. You dont need to spray an engine, just mix up some epoxy and hardener seperately and brush it on, English style.

Regular hylomar.

I went into my local Halfords store and asked the school child assistant for Hylomar and got the "Never heard of it" answer. But then the child also didn't know what a gasket sealer was. Halfords becomes less and less useful as each year passes.

Mike, lets be honest Half*rds have always been useless and expensive, and have a tendency to rip people off, like fitting 2 wiper blades for £4, thats at least £240/hour!!!!!
So dont expect good service then they they have untrained staff.

I agree with the general sentiments about Halfords. I could not believe it when they asked if I wanted the wipers I had bought, to be fitted. I didn't bother to ask for the price I was so offended! :)

I also agree with the comment about price. I usually go to a nearby motor factors and they are generally far cheaper; usually half the price. However, it was a Sunday when the wipers were bought and they were the nearest and open.

I've also found their engine paint to be not very durable either, chipping easily and not holding their sheen well.

These days Halfords profits seem to mainly come from cycles and cycling products, ICE products (I love that ludicrous 'in car entertainment' acronym) and camping & leisure sales. This is not necessarily Halfords problem, its just that as fewer people are capable of fiddling with their vehicles and fewer vehicles are fiddlable with. The actual 'diy/mechanical' sections are becoming smaller and the ranges they sell fewer. Halfords have to go with the flow; while the likes of us have to go elsewhere.

Thanks for the tip re epoxy paint, I did not know you could get epoxy paint for engine use. I have not been impressed with the report for the POR 15 products either ... looking at various reports on the web.

I have used White Knight epoxy enamel, single part, with good results. I don't know if it available up there, or not. I found that Indian Red is a good match for MGB maroon.
