MG MGB Technical - Vented Fuel Tank vs Non

Hi,
I have a 79 B'. I bought a new fuel tank and had it shipped over from england (which is another story) anyway they sent me one with out the vented pipe fitting. Just wondering if anyone has any ideas on how to go about venting the tank, any problems etc.

On a side note I bought a bunch of parts from the MGB Hive in England and had them shipped over. My quote from UPS was $350 which I got online and then talked to someone in the US about it. Now it seems they are trying to charge me $750+ on car parts that cost about $850 !!!

Hi UK cars use a vented fuel filler cap not a separate pipe system. You could use the same or introduce a pipe into the filler neck (the metal part would be easy to solder a connection into) Jim.

JRB. It sounds, from Jim's comments, that you should source a fuel filler neck and gas cap from the UK. That would solve your fuel tank venting problem is the easiest way.

As to the cost of shipping, it is going up significantly, even here in the US. Shipping paid for overseas is converted to US dollars when we have to pay for it here in the US. The weak position of the US dollar adds to the costs involved.

Thanks Guys,
Yes I do understand the pounds to dollars conversions. Yes the shipping rates here in the US are rising. Their website has it all figured out for you and im just pretty pissed about the difference between the quote and the price they are charging me. Should of been notified. Not just sent a bill. Anyway thanks for the info guys.

The filler neck vent pipe works well, Apparently the factory did this prior to having the intank venting set up. I think the neck option works better, greater tank capacity. I used a small brass hose fitting with a nut on it, and some epoxi. About half way up. Of course the neck must protrude through the body of the car so you may fill the tank with petrol. When fitting the neck, normally you insert from the outside of the boot with the rubber surround in place. (hmmm)
With the vent pipe fitted you need to insert through the rear body work from the inside of the boot, with out the rubber surround in place. Then you put the flexible rubber surround on from the outside.

Since the tank has never had fuel in it, it's still safe to have someone weld or braze the proper fittings into place. It will be cheaply and easily done, most likely by a radiator shop. Show 'em the old one, and they should be able to copy it. My opinion is that keeping the tank venting up to US spec will be to your advantage, and it shouldn't be that expensive so long as you've never yet filled the tank with gasoline.
