MG MGB Technical - Water pumps

I have just been reading that Moss now do 2 grades of water pump, the normal one that doesn't fit correctly, and one called a classic gold, the original GWP114 costs £19-50, and the classic gold costs £36-00, has anyone bought one of these, if so what is your opinion of it,

30 years ago I bought an alloy one that didn't fit properly. It soon started weeping on warm-up so I bought a cast-iron one which hung around for years with the weep getting no worse until I did some work on the engine and decided to fit it. It wasn't long before that started spraying coolant round the engine bay. So another one from Brown & Gammons last year GWP130Z i.e. after-market at £25 and that drips as well.

Moss say "Classic Gold, we only give our products with the very highest quality and performance this label. All Classic Gold products are reproduced to exact standards, meaning you get the best quality and fitment that you need, without the price tag that can be associated with genuine parts." So they are copies, and at that price I'd expect the other one to be as well, albeit with a suffix letter. OTOH maybe the OEM is having them made in China or India (like Lucas) to be able to charge less with all that implies.

I see Moss show the cheap one as out of stock and superseded by the CG, so if you want one from there now you don't have much choice.

Moss say "Classic Gold, we only give our products with the very highest quality and performance this label. well I had an oil filter once with that label on and was not very impressed with it,

I bought my last pump from MGOC GWP130 in Jan 2018 which is still at £24.95 inc vat. Occasionally i get one or two drips from the hole underneath the impeller (if that's what you call it)as the block cools down. When the car is used more often (when we get some decent dry weather) it doesn't seem to drip at all.
(This is the 4th pump in 39 year's of ownership & other than the original which probably lasted 20 years the current one so far seems more water tight!

Hi,

I've fitted a MOSS CG one years ago and have no issues. The trick is to follow MOSS's fitting instructions, which say to run the pump dry for a little while, before installing, so that the seal can seat properly. I did this, and as said, no issues.

Interesting, not seen that before! Maybe next time ... if I remember ...

Nothing about installation though.

I've also found the bolt/screw information is not always correct. Doing a trial fit I left the gasket off and nipped up one screw at a time, checking that (a) enough threads are engaging, but more importantly (b) the longer screws aren't bottoming in blind holes. I had to do some juggling between a set of old and new screws, cutting some down, to get the correct fit. Some have a partially plain shank where the plain part was longer than the thickness of the pump boss, so no good at all.
