MG MGB Technical - Weight of a non-OD, 3 synchro gearbox

Good morning all,

I have really tried to find an answer to this question online, but it is surprisingly difficult to pin down - I have come across answers ranging from 20kg to 47kg.

Does anyone on here happen to know the dry weight of a non-OD, 3 synchro gearbox, please? I need to send the broken one from my '66 GT back to the gearbox builder to get my exchange surcharge back, and the courier needs to know the weight and dimensions. I can't find either online reliably, so wondered if anyone on here happened to know the weight (possibly from having done similar in the past).

I am going to visit the garage later on to measure the 'box, but they don't have a facility for weighing it.

Thank you and apologies for asking a question which I thought would be easily answerable online!

I can't help you with a number. However, do you know anyone with luggage scales? I have a small handheld unit that I bought online for a 6 or 7 dollars on ebay - it would do the job, but it's a bit far to send it!!

Piers,
if you can wait until later I think Norm has lists of weights (apologises if it's not Norm but someone else)

I can't imagine it'll matter here but I add on a small amount to the figure to allow for residue oil and general muck on the g/box - off course this only matters if you're really close to some weight limit - packaging can also take you over limits

I would think it is nearer to 47 than 20.

Can't you take some bathroom scales with you?

Leyland Workshop Manual sez 78lb or 35.5 kilo approx. for the 18G/GA i.e. 3-synch. So yes, 2 kilos closer to 47 then 20 :o)
Paul Hunt

Thank you for the various responses.

I couldn't find it anywhere in my Haynes manual, Paul, thank you for that figure, it seems to fit with the online consensus so thank you very much.

And Dave, thanks for the thought, but I failed on bathroom scales - I took ours along, but as the crate a metre long and the scales are digital the figure just bounced around without ever settling on a reliable figure.

I'll go with 35.5 and thank you all for the responses!

otherwise just stand on a bathroom scale without the box in your arms, then again with, and do the math

Or just take the scale with you to the shop and put the gearbox on it - less stress on the arms and back.....

Just curious: Does anyone have the weight of the other variants? 4 synchro and with OD?
Tore

Hi Tore,

In researching the weight of my gearbox I came across a figure of 47kg for the 4 synchro OD 'box in three separate places, but have no idea how reliable it is, on each occasion it was an opinion given on a forum.

(The courier successfully collected and delivered mine this morning, not blinking at my labelled '36kg' so thank you very much Paul H!)

4 sync O/D has always rounded to 50kg in my head when I've weighed it, so 47 kg could well be the precise figure.
