MG MGB Technical - What is easier

Just got in a new rear hatch seal for my 67 GT. Just wondering is it worth trying to take the holding plate off and reinstall the soft gasket with the hatch on or just take the hatch off?

When I first installed it, we had the car stripped and the hatch off. My main concern is removing the padded fiberglass cover over the hinge.

Take it off, don't think you can do otherwise. It's only 4 screws, but watch out for shims under the hinge brackets. These are the only adjustment so it will go back on in exactly the same place.

Bruce: To ensure that it remains easy, take pix of your step by step disassembly If you are like me, you will forget just how it came apart. That's wehen the fun really starts, if you get my drift.

cheers

On my 75 the rear part of the headliner is held with four spring clips which popped out and back in quite easily. The C-post covers needed to be removed first, as I recall.

PS. A pal had refitted his hatch after painting, then fitted the glass, when I found the second partial seal lying in a box (one of many that came with the car). So he had to take it off again, this time with the added weight of the glass, on his back, and manouvere it out through the side door of the garage to lay it on the grass to fit the additional seal. Then reverse the process to refit the hatch. And before you complain what a difficult job it is, he is blind and did it totally by touch and on his own.

Ok, so sounds like a nice weekend project. I know when I put the rear headliner cover on, I actually replaced the metal clips with rubber tree type push in holders. They do come off without much effort.

I will do some pictures so we can have for others.

Bruce, You don't need to take any trim off. Removing the four screws holding the hinges to the tailgate are all that is necessary. Just get someone, or two, to help you.

Thanks Allan

That is exactly what I found today. Forgot that the hinge is screwed onto both the car and the hatch. The 4 hinge screws came out very easy.
