I like the insurance of a door bar, but it can be done without as shown by Carl at Eclectic Motor Works. Here's his job on a B roadster. http://www.eclecticmotorworks.com/jamgb04.html
Although his primary focus is MGAs, I find the information very useful for other cars as well and check his site often.

If the sills are like lace then it maybe the floorpans holding the car together. I used coachbolts and a chunk of timber I had in the garage when I did this, although I did not need to change the floor pans. I put an axle stand under the front "chassis rail" the B is semi-monocoque, and one under the back axle. I also left the doors on but I must have wedged them open for at least some of the time.

I bare metal stripped my roadster and replaced one outer sill and both floors without any bracing whatsoever. it sat in my shed on a rotisserie for five years while i climed all over it. i never considered the car bending and luckily it didnt??! the tunnel must be bloody strong!

Rich,
Simply put the more support the better since you are removing (albeit temporarily) some of the main structural components of the shell.

I would suggest the door brace but you may be able to use the bolt in type rather than have to weld one in.

I would also use a support running underneath the floor pan for the full length of the floor pan inboard of the sills. Under the seats in other words.

This will minimise distortion by taking the weight of the car off the wheels and spreading it out over as large an area as possible.

Good luck , Pete.
