MG MGB Technical - Window regulator arc?

I need to remove the drivers window to replace the window seals, and I need to remove the window to drill out the old rivets. The shop manuals say that after removing the regulator retaining and set screws to remove the window regulator arc from the bottom of the glass. I can't find any pictures or description of this part. Can you describe it for me? Thanks.

There are 2 arms, attached to the regulator, that have wheels on their ends. These ride inside a channel that is part of the bottom rail of the window. A pair of cutouts are provided to allow for the removal of the 2 wheels when the regulator is in the correct position for removal. Once you have removed the four bolts from the center of the regulator, it will be much easier to position the regulator so that the window can be removed. Make certain to observe where each bolt comes out of the regulator. The regulator can only be bolted back to the door correctly in 1 out of the 4 possible positions. The other 3 won't allow for the all of the bolts to be reinstalled. This is a fairly common dilemma. I've taken apart a lot of doors that only have 2 bolts holding the regulator in place. It throws off the regulator geometry and makes the raising and lowering of the window difficult. RAY

Thanks Ray. Do you know of a diagram that shows the correct position of the regulator? I did not mark the location when it came out. Just to be clear, are you talking about the regulator itself, where the crank is, or the regulator extension that bolt to the middle of the door panel? Thanks

There is a rail attached to the bottom of the glass and 2 wheels at the end of the arms run in this and between them and the guides the window is controlled. Getting it back together is a bit of a puzzle and I wrote a how to which is in the archives. Pop rivets are the way to go for the sealing strip

Dan, I was referring to the regulator extension that bolts to the center of the door. This is from the Bentley manual. RAY

If you remove the little bracket (with a felt pad on top I think) in the bottom of the door I think you can wind the window down past the bottom of the door edge enough to get to the strip.

Although now I think of it those brackets might be welded in place? My doors had been repaired and these were missing. I have blocks of sealed wood in there instead to stop the windows going too far down.

The best way is to unbolt the regulator as Ray says. I always find loosening the rear channel helps too. You don't want to mess with the front one if you can help it as this affects the quarter light adjustment.

Getting the damn thing all back together is a bit like wrestling with a drunk octopus! Lots of places to cut you or trap your fingers too!

I was able to remove the window without renoving the front channel and quarter light, Can the window be reinstalled without moving the front channel? I ave the back channel out of the door.
Dan Hiltz

Yes, it can. Feed the door glass into the door a little bit at a time and you'll be able to engage the window rollers on the regulator tracks. Make sure that the regulator tracks are clean and lubricated with white Lithium grease. Also, lubricate the regulator drive and gear mechanism while everything is apart. RAY
