MG MGB Technical - Windscreen adjustment

'71 Roadster. My windscreen needs adjusting. The rake is too steep, not parallel with the quarterlight. It also needs to be moved forward about 3/16". I've slackened off all of the bolts & the 10/32 screws that holds the spacers in place, but I still can't move the screen forward or backwards. I can jiggle it up & down but it always ends up in the same psn.I noticed the fixing holes on the body have been elongated or "egged" & there is room for the bolts to move further forward but I can't get them to move. What am I doing wrong ? or have I overlooked something ? Any suggestions are more than welcome. Barrie E

Often the flat washer on the bottom bolts will contact a horizontal pressing preventing forward movement as you describe. Cut a flat on the washer tho sometimes it is necessary to reshape the pressing, Have you loosened the centre two bolts that secure the tensioner rod? Jim

On mine I also adjusted the angle of the quarter lights. I had to insert washers under the frame at the front where the two screws goes in at the front (covered by two plastic plugs on the doors). You don't get much adjustment there but it was enough.

You certainly *should* be able to adjust the fore and aft and the rake with the oversize holes, that is the only 'official' way of lining up the screen with the quarter-lights. The quarter-lights themselves can (ordinarily) only be adjusted for alignment with the side of the windscreen uprights by moving the bottom of the drop-glass channel in toiwards the centre of the car or out from it, and only other variation coming from the alignment of the doors to the door openings, which have to be done with respect to the wings of course.

If there is a new rubber seal from the base of the screen frame to the body this can make it very difficult to even get the screen down far enough to get the bolts in, as well as aligning it to the quarter-lights, I know this from having two screen glasses in quick succession.

The washers under the fixing bolts have flats cut in them & at the moment can swivel around , so they are not the problem. The centre bolts are only hanging on by one or two threads at present. I've had the forward bolts out , that's how I know the fixing holes have been elongated. I did put some sealant between the bottom rubber & the scuttle, but I thought that I'd severed it all. Maybe not, the dash is still in situ at the moment. It looks like I'll have to remove it & start from scratch. Barrie E

If you have sealant on the scuttle try passing some thing like 'dentle floss' or very strong thin cord through between screen seal and scuttle and use it like a saw - forwards and backwards.
