MG MGB Technical - Wire Wheel Hub Drawing

Hello.
I own a 1973 MGB GT with rostyles. Recently I bought a set of 4 wires with spinners. I'm going to refurbish them and assemble the 165R14 tyres. I'll keep the original axle...

1. Will I have for sure tyre rubbing on the rear wings? Just occasionally or on a daily basis?

2. I've got free access to proper machinery. Where can I get the hubs drawings so that an expert machinist can manufacture them?

Thanks,

Valter.

The disc wheel differential is wider than the w/w differential by about 1-1/2" or so on each side.

You will most likely rub on the fender lips if you do not change over to a w/w diff or narrow ($$$) your existing diff.

What is the availability of used spares (differential) in your area?

Are you planning to manufacture your own wire wheel splined hubs? This is tricky business from machining to metallurgy. I would suggest you simply buy them from a catalog.

Rick also points out an important issue with the width of the axle tube. If you can find a good used axle it would be a much easier, and possibly cheaper way to go. Good luck!

Hi, thanks for your replies.

In Portugal these cars are sort of common, but nobody sells second parts. So I have to live with the existing axle tube...

Yes, I'm planning to do my own wire wheel splined hubs. I've got access to aerospace grade steels and extremely accurate machining tools. And I bet they will be better manufactured than if I just buy them from a shop.
So where can I find the drawings?

Thanks!
Valter.

Whether the tyres rub on the arches or not when fitting wire-wheel hubs to a steel-wheel axle depends on a number of factors:

Standard hubs will almost certainly rub, even so-called 'conversion' hubs rub.

The wider the tyre the more likely it is.

Chrome bumper cars are more likely than rubber bumper because of ride height.

OE-spec springs are more likely than what many distributor seem to have these days, which are way too hard and/or arched, giving much higher ride-heights than there should be - for loadings within factory specs at any rate.

Loading and cornering forces are the other factor.

Left-hand bends may well be worse than right-hand, as most cars seem to have the bodywork closer to the left-hand tyre than the right-hand.

It's got to be easier to have a couple of hubs shipped over from (e.g.) the UK, surely?

It is important to remember that if you change the rear axle to a W/W axle, you will also have to change the Hand Brake cable, since the S/W axle is wider.
