MG MGB Technical - Wrong size steering column bush

If you are thinking of replacing the lower steering column bush (MPB1002) on an early collapsible column, (1972 MGB chrome bumper) then check the part before stripping everything down. I've just purchased a new one and found that the od was about 1.5mm too large to fit into the column case, the id was 2mm too large to fit the column shaft and its length was too short by some 5mm to fit snugly against the casing shoulder. Other than that it was perfect!!
Fortunately my local supplier is on the case and hoping to get a good part from a different supplier. He says that recently he's had other parts, sourced from China, that have not fitted.

I think these vendors just buy anything that is cheap with the correct label without checking anything.

Gery makes a bush set and is probably the US authority on steering columns. He's not made them for a bit, but I think he's getting ready for another batch.

Just had a chat with my supplier who has had some new bushes delivered. Sadly, they are the same same as the 'wrong' ones. Does anyone have a lower steering column bush (MPB1002) from/for a 1972 roadster to hand and/or a column. If so, can you measure the internal diameter of the bush and/or the diameter of the column where the bush sits and post it here. My column diameter is 25.4mm (an inch). The bush I have has an id of >27mm so pretty damn useless.

I've now established that the steering column od should be 25.4mm and the od of the bush should be 33.3. So if anyone knows where I can get a bush with the correct dimensions I'd love to know. Otherwise it's down to Bodge and Fettle for some help!!!

this company has been manufacturing a few parts for MGs, one being column bushes for early
collapsible steering columns.

Thanks for the tip JE, but there's a notice from Gerry saying he's all but given up his website and GEM because of a problem with his host site. The link you provided no longer works.

After being locked out from the BBS for a couple of years I am back able to post again. Looks like the short term fix for your column is to have a local machinist make you a bush of proper dimensions. Contact me by email and I may be able to help you. Gmasterman@aol.com Cheers Gerry
