MG MGB Technical - Yellow cooling fans

Boy! hate to stop buy only when I need something, thou I still read here often. On to my latest crisis
the grandkids want me to drive them in the July 4th parade and the 77 MBG has one of the electric cooling fans which is slow to get turning, I have tried to get lub to the bearings but as you know these motors are not designed to open up. So if I order the replacement cooling fan kit from say VB. do I need two fans or is the one they sell larger and will replace the two original ones. And after reading a previous thread,
my engine does miss and sputter after about a 30 minute drive although the temp gage only indicates mid range or slightly hotter. I know, how can someone in Alaska have cooling problems? Anyhow thanks for any suggestions and replys. Jim

HI Jim,

Since time is short and I know you don't want to let the kids down. I would head to your local auto parts store and buy a fan kit. Its sure to be the same as VB and Moss sales. On big fan (not sure on size) in front of the radiator should do the trick.

You will need to cut and splice a few wires but is no more than a one hour job. Also to be on the safe side replace your thermostat as well if its been awhile. Your local Auto shop should have one in stock.

Jim,
I have a 77 MG as well. I got rid of the two fan system about 15 years ago and was never sorry about it. I installed the large fan that I got from Victoria British and it works great. Here in central Indiana, it does get abit warm, but the big fan does a great job. Best of luck on your project.

The fan motor on my UK '77 opened up for me to soak the rear bearing in oil and cure the squeal.

The blade is held with a grubscrew, then if memory serves me right, there were two axial through bolts to unscrew, and the brush (blade) end pulls off.

Thanks for the info, will probably go for the new fan from a local supplier if available. When I first restored the car, I pulled the fans out and lubed the outer bearing just by soaking the shaft but seems the thru bolts were long rivets so I hesitated to drill them out, but I may try again as if i ruin the motors I was going to replace anyway. Really appreciate the fast replies. Jim

I've seen those motors drilled at the end for lube and then fitted with a rubber plug.

One of mine has a grease-nipple at the non-fan end. And when I changed a motor I had to change the blades as well as I simply could not shift that grub-screw, even destructively out of a determination not to be beaten after having replaced both motor and blades anyway.
