MG MGB Technical - Zirk fitting

While I had the B up on stands to adjust the OD, I also did some lubing of the underside and the front suspension.

On the driver side kingpin, there is a zirk on the bottom that is a tiny straight zirk. Found it difficult to get a standard grease gun on to the nipple. Pulled it out to change it but found the angled zirk's I have hit the edge of the A pan and wont screw in.

Anyone found a longer straight zirk that will fit into that space?
Bruce Cunha

G'day Bruce,

'Grease nipples" here, but, yes. I fitted extended versions to both the universal joints on my '69 some years ago. I located those at one of the local suppliers of motor parts. Should be available from like sources (probably the more specialised rather than the 'packaged' retail stores) where you live. Probably worthwhile to go with an estimated length in mind.

Angled on mine. Not had to replace so haven't had a problem with them fouling the spring pan, which surprises me. But they are two-part comprising a straight section with an angled tapped hole, and a short section that screws in to that to give the angle, see attached. I wouldn't get my gun on a straight one.

I've also found the middle one needs to be longer or my gun fouls the casting.

Having looked at mine there is no way it could foul the 'A-pan', which I took to mean the spring pan between th A-arms? But it could foul the hub back-plate if the angled part was longer. As it happens, mine are short enough to clear it.

Whilst on subject of zirks/grease nipples does anybody find that sometimes Wanner grease gun pumps grease around nipple rather than through it?

I often remove nipple to see if blocked (doesn't appear to be), poking around in hole in component, then refitting, and a bit of fiddling, grease then gets pumped in as it should. Very strange.

Same with my non-Wanner. It seems one has to get it dead straight to the nipple, and even then sometimes take it (the gun) off and put it back on.

I sometimes find that having a slight pull back resistance on the flexi-pipe and nipple connector (forget what it's called) sometimes helps.

Thanks Paul. That second one looks like what I need. I Have a package of grease fittings of various sizes and with the exception of some very small ones, all have larger nuts on them That is what causes the interference. I will see if I can locate one of the longer ones at my auto parts store.

I also find that you have to get the grease nipple just so or it goes around the fitting.

I did find that my small grease gun has a smaller head that seems to work. I normally don't use this one as it goes through the small cartridges fairly quickly. ( I use a lot of grease on my tractor and loader)

(it might be what you've already referred to already ... )

The original grease syringe that was part of tool kits can often fit in and pump easily without it seems getting grease around the nipple but it is small capacity.
