MG MGF Technical - 195 50'S 15' Tyres

I posted a thread regarding reasonable priced tyres on the general board. I have a question in respect to the 195 50's 15" on the front of a lowered MPI. My question is this. Is there enough room for these tyres I would persume so as others have tried this set up.

Just checking before I get them fitted.

Hi,

The 195/50/15 diameter is approximately the same as the 205/50/15's on the rear. So if your rear tyres fit OK, these should be OK on the front. I think some people had problems with rubbing, though I think this was when using 17" rims rather than due to the lowering.

Perhaps anyone with a lowered car could comment?

Wheel arch rubbing can be fixed by reshaping the plastic arch liners. A hot air paint stripper or hair dryer can be used to soften the plastic so it can be reshaped to handle the bigger tyres. To find where the arch needs to be reshaped you should be able to see the marks where the tyre was rubbing. Hardly a major problem when you know how to fix it. Some Rover dealers will respond by pumping the car up on it's hydragas, this is a big mistake as it messes up the handling and suspension settings. On the TF they can't pump it up so this is one big advantage over the F in that it removes one way a dealer can screw up your car.

Is it ok to mix NTC3 and NTC5 tyres?

On an MGF the best thing to do with NCT3 tyres is to replace them, they are next to useless in the wet. The best price performance I found was with Toyo Proxes which are cheaper than the Goodyear F1 tyre and just as good if not better. I also tried Pirelli P7000s they were good but almost twice the price of the Toyos. If you have lots of money the Bridgestons were rated as the best a while back but they are quite soft compound and wear down quickly..

The problem with the wheel arch liners is effected by the width of the tyre more than the diameter. I personally would go no wider than 195 on the front which I found to be the optimum size for the front, any bigger and you get really bad tramlining any narrower and you get understeer. The rears are a different story and 205x15 or 225x16 will do the job nicely.

If you want to go for near Bridgstone SO-2 performance but want the tire to last a little longer than go for RE720's. I've used them on the car for a few years and they wear really well. Also chucked the car around on the Nurburgring and they gripped superbly!! The first time around the circuit with Dieter and Scarlet behind me was a bit tame, but a few laps on they were squeeling good and proper <grin>.

Last time I got some the fronts were around UKP65 each and the backs UKP85 (from what I can remember).

Fronts are £40 if you get the 195's , reasr £62 for the 205's
