MG MGF Technical - 2 weeks in garage & the verdict is !!!!!!
new wiring loom for the whole car. Well after all my problems over the last couple of months and new spark plugs, HT leads, dist cap, rotor arm, crank sensor and engine bay wire harness replaced the problem still exists with the revs dropping off, stalling starting problems and a miss fire the garage have come up with the wiring harness needs changing although they are not 100% sure this will solve the problem. I am waiting for the dealer to tell me the bad news which is the cost of the fitting as the car needs stripping out and with the wiring loom approx £450+vat will not be a cheap fix if at all it does fix it. Oh no! Unbelieveable. You have my sympathies Tom. I do hope this _is_ the cure, after all you've had to try. Dave |

Tom Sorry to hear about the car needing such expensive repairs. Is there anything in particular that convinced them they need to replace the entire loom - or is it just the next guess ? How about the damage to the new plugs and leads - do they have any idea how this is happening ? And I guess that Warranty Direct aren't interested ? Steve |

Tom, Did you make it to France? Cheers Patrick |
Patrick Beet |
Yep made it to france in a Rover 25 (, not quite an MG but it allowed me to go on holiday. As for the reason why changing the whole wiring loom is because there is nothing eletrical to change or so they have told me. However they cannot guarantee that it will fix the problem. I have spoken with rover helpdesk so have put my concerns about the problems and mounting costs specially if it does not fix it as the fitting of the wiring harness is £600 + vat. As for warranty direct what a waste of money as I don't think any of this work is covered. Tom |

Glad you got the holiday in Tom, and hope the F is back on the road quickly for the least possible money! Cheers Patrick |

Can't they even attempt to locate where the loom has failed and try to splice that bit first? A whole loom seems a bit drastic. |
Bob |
Seems like a desparate measure I agree. Have they excluded the possibility that one of the new components they've fitted is actually faulty??? I think you need an expert second opinion (difficult I know, whilst the car is in pieces, awaiting repair... :o( ) |
Rob Bell |
Tom Did they replace the battery?? Stefan |
Stefan Gibney |
As far as I know battery is fine as the car can be cranked over (for minutes) with no problems yet the car just will not start. As for one of the components being faulty I don't think so as they had a 1.8mpi parked next to mine as a donor car and swapped things over, with the exception of the wiring loom as it is not possible. Hopefully with Rover involved it will get sorted this time but for how much I will have to wait and see. All I want is my car back specially with all this nice dry weather we are having. Tom |

they seem very confident that the car has an electrical problem. 600 quid should buy a lot of auto-electrical expertise, so Rob's suggestion of a 2nd opinion is good - could a specialist vist the dealer ? They've already replaced the engine-bay loom which should include all sensors necessary to run the engine. The only other area is earthing - easily as big a potential problem as wiring. Steve |

Tom I got my dealer to send a technical report to MGR on Monday 19th. This was after I called the help line and they suggested that course of action. As of today the dealer is STILL waiting for a response. I called MGR late last week to ask what the hold up was (they're supposed to get back in 48hrs) - they said they've not yet been able to diagnose it. I'm hoping to not have to pay for anything else until MGR give a positive and guaranteed diagnosis but we'll see...... (My dealer did also promise to request a field engineer from Longbridge if this plan fails) |

Tom, you are not alone with this unusual repair. There's a girl here in D currently reporting the same reaction of the workshop. 96 made MGF in her case. Regards Dieter PS. DOH ! 450 quid would be so many *better* invested for dark side stuff :(( |

I have spoken to dealer about my concerns about spending £1200+ and the problem not being fixed and they haved told me that there is nothing left to change after the loom so if it is not fixed I don't know what I will do. I don't think they will want it back as thay keep telling me I am getting a bargain as they are not charging me for all the labour. However it is still going to end up costing over £2000 whether it is fixed or not so someone is laughing and it aint me. So far have heard nothing back from MGRover and have contacted them again. Tom |

After thinking about it for two weeks MGR have come up with this SUGGESTION: "try changing the ignition coil" I was hoping for something definite like "It is the ignition coil"... The reason I got them involved was because my dealer was reduced to guesswork and now MGR are doing the same thing. I've called them to complain - they say they call me in 24rhs. |
John Philpott |
It's very depressing. The coil and LT,HT, and earth connections are the most likely cause - but problems like this need an expert, and few dealers have such an expert. Good Luck to both of you - I would really like to see these problems resolved. Steve |
Steve |
John Sounds a bit of a guess there replace the ignition coil. Mine has had everything changed apart from the wiring loom so only time will tell. Mine is still in the garage but hopefully will get it back on monday thingers crossed. MGR have been in contact with the garage but I have not heard anything from MGR myself. Steve I cannot wait till I do some trouble free top down motoring again. Tom |

Yet to get my car back, so am getting worried that the wire loom has not fixed it, but apparenty the technician is of ill and they don't want someone else to takeover half way through the job which does make sense but does not help me out specially as I have had to give them there car back. I just want my car back working. Tom |
Tom Randell |
Tom, I totally sympathise with you. Due to debates whether my car was going to be written off, shortage in parts, christmas holidays etc, my car was off the road for months. The waiting isn't nice, especially when you haven't got any idea of when you are getting it back. Hope you get some good news soon. Paul |

Jeepers, how frustrating! :o( Keep us posted Tom. |

Things are looking up. Wire loom all fitted, but when plugged up to a computer there was no communications with the ecu, ecu changed and everything works. The garage think that the wire harness had caused the ecu to short and bugger up. I actually beleive this as I had seen them change the ecu before which made no difference. As far as an ecu is concerned I am happy as my warranty will pay for that (at least it should). Hopefully not much longer until I get my car back. Tom |
