MG MGF Technical - 205's on front & MOT

Fitted 205's all round on 15" VVC rims this week.

I've got an MOT booked first thing tomorrow morning but haven't got round to getting a hair-dryer/heat-gun to sort out the rubbing issue at the front.

Two questions:
1. If I don't fix this prior to MOT will this be a problem?
2. What is the best tool for the job? (hair-dryer, heat-gun or blow torch?)

You might think the blow torch is mad but it would be the easiest if practical as my car is usually parked a fair distance from any mains power.

Incidentally, I really struggled to get the tyre fitment place the fit the 205s at the front (having bought them off mytyres.com). I'd read on the BBS that they weren't a bad idea but the tyre fitters thought I was mad. What is the latest feeling on one size all round? Should I have just gone for 195s?

No, no problem :o)

Be careful not to melt or burn the plastic! But if your very very careful, you could use a blow torch. Personally I'd use a hot air gun.

205s are fine John - but 195s are probably slightly better, but the advantage of having the same size of tyres front and rear to even out wear cancels out the slightly better steering you get with the 195s...

The MOT guy should fail you on rubbing at full lock, but they probebly won't notice.

It'd have to make a seriously loud noise for the MoT inspector to notice it! LOL

Did your car pass the MOT.

The "F" does notlike Snow and is short on luggage space for Ski Trips to Switzerland so we elected to fit Goodyear Eagle GW3s on the 1.8 Astra.
185/65-15s from Mytyres at £61 against UK £115.
The tyre shop could not / would not fit them as the were different from the original manufacturers 195/60 and he may be liable should the car be in an accident with the wrong tyres fitted. I was in fact OK as Vauxhall/Opel specify a different M+S Size.

The MOT requires checking Tyre Size/Type and the MG Handbook carries a Warning "Only fit ReplacementTyres that are identical to the original specification"

How much is your Insurance Loaded for fitting non-specified Tyres ??

Passed the MOT. Hadn't even thought of telling the insurance company... hmmm.
