MG MGF Technical - 45 degree nipples

finally got round to fitting 45 deg grease nipples to car when i regreased n/s/r grease only came out of one side no matter how much grease i put in also can anyone remember ride height settings as i want to check in am thanks richard
tg hardwick

My 45 degree nipples arrived at the end of last week - so hopefully will be fitting these to the nice rebuild front suspension for Project Shed this evening! Not sure I can explain why grease is appearing at one end only, other than the rubber seal is better at one end than the other?

Regarding ride height - do you mean the 368mm +/- 10mm at 17 Celcium with an 0.4mm correction per degree C difference, measured at the front wheel, between the wheel's centre and the wheel arch lip vertically above it?

yes rob checked mine weekend just slightly under bottom spec so not worried tip much easier to undo bottom of shock to fit nipples saves time as they are fiddley little sods lol ps have spax all round and noticed the stickers on frt shocks have been rubbing on top sleeves any ideas why as ok on rears richard
tg hardwick

Thanks for the tip - but as it happens, the subframe is off the car having been repainted and rebuilt - http://www.mgfregister.org/forum/download/file.php?id=1036

Regarding the wear of the stickers on the front - not sure. Whereabouts is it wearing? They're not fouling the tyre on full lock are they???
Rob Bell

when you remove wheel its right in front of you cant see it rubbing i have 11 spoke 16s with big brake conversion will check when wife comes home as i have two year old daughter running round and was working nights last nite lol

I fitted a set of M6x45deg grease nipple some years ago. Fiddly it certainly is, but has to be one of the simplest and best mods possible, Greasing is just a pleasure nowadays!

May I ask where you can buy the 45deg nipples, seems a good idea and I'm working on my hubs soon, thanks!
Russ68

flea bay have plenty £4 odd for ten m6 x 1 is what you need
tg hardwick

Cheers, £4.38 in total inc postage, not bad!
Russ68

Agreed, they are a bit fiddly to fit! But a good job done - need to fit them to the rears now. Much easier when the upper arm is removed from the subframe - but since that is a subframe-out-of-car task, not an option for most! LOL

Received mine today and wonder how one gets them set at the best angle for access, given you’d normally tighten a nipple until sealing completely tight, they could end up pointing away from where you wanted them. Is this a problem? Can you use a washer to take up some of the thread or would this lead to sealing problems itself?

I ask this theoretically as I’ve not looked at the job on the car, but guess it’s not particularly high pressure (as per hydraulics) so is not perhaps an issue?
Russ68

That's a really good question Russ - been wondering the same. I was planning just nipping them off a tad to optimise angle for re-greasing - but would be interested to hear whether anyone had any other thoughts on this? :O)
Rob Bell

you want them pointing away fron bottom of shock i thought this may be a issue and thought of washers but when i fitted found they tightened up in just the right position just be careful you dont cross thread when fitting as they are fiddely and dont overtighten as they are just hollow bolts in the end good luck you will be fine just be patient doing it

Okey dokey, sounds reasonable to me, will give it a go at the weekend.

BTW my new MGMANIA hood has arrived and it looks great, inc glass screen, demist relays / switches and return strap, looking forward to fitting it :)
Russ68

Direct them to the centre between shocker and knuckle joint.

Cheers Dieter, I got as far as tidying up the osf 1/4 including fitting the new nipple, a great mod, much easier to get the gun on. I removed the original with a 7mm socket then tightened the new 45deg with a 9mm spanner, didn't need to remove the shock and had no problem with leakage from the nipple when moved to the best angle for access, so all good :)

Sorry I didn't come back earlier - grease nipples have a tapered thread so that they tighten more gradually, allowing the possibility of a good full turn where they can be both tight enough and seal satisfactorily.

Just fitted the rear nipples and this is a great mod, much easier to get the gun on. I didn't notice a tapered thread and thought I could get an extra turn on the nipple to achive the right position, I couldn't. But winding it back 3/4 of a turn gave me the best position and I didn't notice and leakage from not having it fully tight.

Everyone should do this mod, cheap and effective :)
Russ68

Agreed! :o)
