MG MGF Technical - 5 Spoke Alloy refurb

How do the "Allen" finishing screws come out?
I have a spare set of wheels to get back to bare metal, then etchprime and undercoat before finishing with "Silver Sparkle" and clearcoat. The Allen bolts turn but don't unscrew. Are they are plastic plugs and not screws?

brown and gammons seem to sell spare screws which I find confusing. to be honest I've never thought of trying to unscrew them!

I had mine redone about 2 years ago now. powdercoat appears to have stuck fine to the bolts so I'm assuming they're metal. Wheels look good, well worth it I was getting fed up pumping up the tyres before each trip.

They are plastic and pressed into the wheel, they tend to snap when trying to get them out prior to refurbing the wheel. In my experience a hot sunny day and 2 small screwdrivers will get a 3 out of 4 success rate. Glue the broken onnes back in and pack edge with card to keep them central in the recess.
Hope this helps good luck.

All is revealed - plastic and pressed in - thanks for that!

However I would look for a Set of A1 condition 15in Alloys on the Bay before paying reconditioning costs.

Geoff, absolute A1 condition 15" 5 spoke alloys will be hard to find. I've already got a spare set that haven't been kerbed - it's the Silver Sparkle finish that's aged and that's what I'm sorting out. I found a place in Blackpool that made (and posted on) some rattle cans to the original "recipe" at a decent price. Having rebuilt my 1996 VVC to as near perfect as possible, including a respray, a rebuilt engine and suspension, the wheels are one of the last work in progress items. Interior leather and hood are the last things to do, when funds permit. My car is one of 2100 others built that year. I wonder how many of it's sisters are left on the road.

I had my alloys reconditioned as I figured it was better to fix what I had and knew were ok than to chance wheels of ebay that may be no better. Having said that, I've just bought one to allow me to get my car in for an MOT to see how she'd do, cheaper than getting a new tyre fitted.
