MG MGF Technical - 52mm TB + Grease

Just got my shiny new 52mm TB through (Thanks Victoria - it's like Xmas came early)

Anyway on my existing 48mm plastic TB I've got it covered in clinging white grease. Having looked at lots of images of the 52mm version I havent noticed anyone doing this on it.

Is this necessary or will it work fine without it? I dont really fancy covering this new one in yucky grease as it's just so pretty!

Sounds like somebody was a bit over enthusiastic with the old greasegun
if anything I would think that the layer of grease, particularly if it gets inside the TB will reduce functionality!!!

lightly grease moving parts only so you can keep the shiney TB

btw how much does Victoria charge?

Your a brave man !

I thought there shouldnt have been as much grease on it. Suspect a dealer may have done it early in the cars life as neither me nor the previous owner (my old man) had done it!

Anyway Victoria charged me £84 including delivery and from what I can tell its a brand spanking new unit rather than a 2nd hand unit!

I'm sitting fiddling with it at my desk and getting very strange looks from the folk in my office!

The clinging white grease sounds like excessive overspray from a can of aerosol based lubricant such as waxoyl.

It would have been aimed at the cable linkage and butterfly valve bearings - but missed :-)

ps Quiz question - where could you use a grease gun on an F?

where could you use a grease gun on an F

Suspension gubbins...Dont know name but I grease mine regularly (plentiful supply of free grease guns as my old man used to own a plant hire firm (not the kind with leaves before anyone cracks a funny))

white auto grease in spraycan for all hinges etc

Don't use petroleum based oils on any kind of rubber seals they'll not react well. If you do need any kind of lubricant make sure it's silicone based.

Although the workshop manual does make reference to some sort of 'gease' (from memory). The little rubber seal should be able to do the job perfectly well by itself.

As far as I can make out the only area for a grease gun are the 4 nipples for the suspension.... although I thought I heard that there were some for the steering rack too but I can't find them illustrated in the manual or find them on the car so suspect that was a red herring....

Good luck fitting it.
