MG MGF Technical - 65,000 Mile Service

As title says my F is due it's 60,000 mile service this week and I was wondering if anyone had any info on what needs doing.

I'm not taking it to a dealers because myself and a friend who is a good mechanic are going to take the job on.
He's going to do the Cam Belt which I am aware needs changing at this point and he's going to help me with easier stuff.

BTW the coolant was drained and bleed recently when replacing the mild steel pipes under the car so I won't have to bother with that thank god.

cheers.

Broadly speaking, the engine is dropped for the cam belt change, although I understand it is possible to undo the front of the subframe and tilt the engine to gain access. The bad news, I suspect, is that you'll have to drain the cooling system. Again. :o(

I don't think you do have to drain the coolant to change the cam belt, Rob, - at least I didn't get charged for any anti-freeze, and he wouldn't have reused the old stuff :-)

When you say drop the engine this sounds like a pretty big job.
Can you give me anymore detail in what is involved and what the risks are?

Cheers.

Memo,

<<When you say drop the engine this sounds like a pretty big job>>

I believe that it is impossible to change the cambelt without undoing one of the engine mountings because the engine mounting goes through the belt. So you have to support the engine while you remove the 2 bolts securing the RH engine mounting and lower the engine ( thus giving some clearance) so that you can get the old belt out and the new belt in. It doesn't mean taking the engine out!

Quick question for Dieter et al. Referring to your link above for the service, where can I find the engine access cover (as opposed to the engine service hatch) which are items 25 and 26 in the check sheet?

Cheers!
Leigh

Hi,

Leigh, I believe that the engine service hatch is the grille in the boot, and the engine access cover is the bolted down panel underneath the carpeted area between the seats and the rear of the hood (there must be a better name for that!).

Regards, Kes.
Kes

Thanks.

I always thought that the dealer removed the engine cover in order to re-fill with oil after a filter change. It must take them ages to do it down the dip-stick.

Funny quest. Kes might have met the point ?

The German translation is equal mad
25 Motorserviceklappe enfernen.
26 Motorabdeckung entfernen.

All above description are not used in any of the other records.

BTW, all the service sheets never mention the 'service panel' in the rear wheel arche for access to the alternator belt. ?
This is named the *closing panel* inside the workshop manual.

On the other had the RH flap to coolant expansion tank in the 'grill thingy' is called *Engine guard access flap*

:)
@ Leigh, just bolt everything off ;)
... but don't forget putting back the 'front_under_bonnet_wiper_motor_cover' if you do any works there :)

Dieter K.

Rover call it the hoodwell.
Kes

The MGR Service Schedule refers to both covers as "engine service hatch" and "engine access cover".

the Owners Handbook further confuses by referring to " Raise the engine guard access flap to access the engine oil filler cap, dipstick and cooling system reservoir."
