MG MGF Technical - 96 MGF rear tyre recommendations

I need new rear tyres for my 96 F, what do people recommend. An MG Rover tech bulletin (TB0128) recommends Continental Premium contact part RTB000950 but I'm not sure whether these are still available. The size is 205/50 R15 86V. Thanks.

Dave, If you are still wondering Toyo Proxes T1-R are very popular and I couldn't recommend them too highly. Try:-

look at 'tyre choices'

Sorry that link doesn't work for reasons I wot not of. Try googling it.

This should do it

Thanks Charless but I'd already spotted that site. When I've contacted tyre fitters they say most of the tyres on that list are no longer available.

I would consider it preferable to have the same make on all 4 corners. What do you have on the front at present ??

The front ones are PRIMA and haven't been on long. They were fitted by the previous owner.

I've now contacted the MGOC technical line and they said continental premium contact 2 are recommended (I guess these are the replacements for the original continental premium contacts). I've checked with my tyre dealer and he can do these for £84 each so I'm planning to have those fitted.

I'd still welcome any views on the subject.

It's quite possible the previous owner had to renew the front tyres due to inner edge wear, so it would be well worth checking the ride height and geometry as part of the exercise. The pages about alignment in Rob Bell's site is very informative, and might help you get maximum mileage from your new rubber.

Geoff's right, the F is a bit sensitive to different tyres front to rear, but IMHO there's less likelihood of 'incompatibility' if the geometry & ride height are correct. The acid test is a heavily used left-hand lane of the motorway - if the car feels steady and isn't tramlining, then usually all is well.

It's very much personal choice, but to give you a starting point here's another vote for the Toyo Proxes. Just be careful (as with most tyres) when you're scrubbing them in.

A vote for Continental premium contact 2 all round. Paid £60 each fitted for 2 rear this summer.

Believe Proxes are strictly speaking a summer tyre?

On a personal note I'd like to thank the good people on the ultimate MG site for their list of tyre suggestions - I've just had all 4 replaced (front 2 failed MOT and one re was 'advised' replacement anyway!)
I've fitted the Toyos - 195/50 front and 205/50 rear. The car certainly feels more secure than it did on previous set and the price was pretty good (a touch over £200 for the lot at my local garage). That being said, I had to prompt them to look for the Toyos, otherwise not sure what they'd have put on if left to their own devices...
