MG MGF Technical - air locks

Had a problem with air lock in cooling system resulting in engine hot but no coolant to radiator ( front pipes cold )
New head gasket fitted but I am still worried about air locks recurring.
Does anyone have any suggestions of what precautions I should take?

Thanks E.J.Smith

To make sure that the people that fitted the head gasket know how to bleed the *F* and check with them that they did all THREE points - there is a lot more in the archives concerning this - just join the enthusiasts club - it cost nothing and have a look.

FYI - critical but there are FOUR bleed points - 1. Radiator - Plastic screw
2. Heater Matrix Bleed Screw - Metal bleed nipple as found on brakes. Top centre of front "Firewall" Bulkhead below wipers.
3. Metal Coolant return pipes bleed screw. left hand side of block (there are two pipes side by side) very close to alternator
4. Auto bleed valve (often stuck). There will be a tube going from the righthand side of the inlet manifold/block going to the expansion tank.

PhilM

Thanks for that PhilM - I stand corrected or rather the MGF workshop manual does - it mentions only 3 bleed points.

I have just done this myself.... I bit labourious but not really beyond DIY....

In fairness to Ted and the Workshop manual, the 'Jiggle valve' that Phil mentions is not a bleed valve as such - but it is a very very good idea to ensure that it is working as it should - and note, there are two jiggle valves! One is on the left of the inlet manifold, the other is located on the expansion tank return pipe running from the heater return pipe...

Thanks Rob - I was getting worried that I had given duff info to the Ford garage in Germany that had repaired the Green Squirrel!

But I guess it would have shown by now if it was wrong:-)
