MG MGF Technical - Alarm/central locking Problems

I have seen many alarm threads on here but have just done a search and only 1 came up. Any way the problem is that you have to get really close to the car to lock or unlock it and sometimes it won't even unlock it then. I have tried a new battery and cleaned any dirt out of the inside at this time, but it is still the same. I read in one on the threads a while ago that you can reset the alarm fob and this sometimes cures it. Is this correct? and if so how do you do this? Also I think that I read that you can adjust the sensitivity of the alarm it'self. Is this also true and if so is this a wise thing to do (Microwaves etc) and is it easy and how?

You only need to reset the fob after a battery change but yours is working so that is not needed. You can reroute the aerial quite easily - yellow wire on in LHS of centre console access through side panel. Also to maximise a weak transmission from the fob blipper, place it under your chin and look at the centre console with you head tilted back. It sounds silly but doubles the strength/range!
Also try cleaning the fob pcb and button rubbers with 'electrical contact cleaner' (from Halfords or Maplins).
Sensitivity can be done, but is a dealer equipment job which you probably don't need. HTH

Thank you for that I will give it a go later

As far as I undretand, it is the sensitivity of the motion sensor which can be increased, not the strength of the signal recieved from the key fob via the yellow wire antenna.

I tried to remove the yellow aerial wire from the lom in my car some time ago, but it was too tightly twisted in the loom.

I just have to have the fob at the window, near the door lock release pin for it to work effectively.

Thanks Sam I will have a look at the weekend

Hello all. No the big fella hasn't got his hands on me yet!
B Smith is your car a Japanese import? if so give up.When in the city the only way could get any reaction was to climb into the passenger footwell and hide the fob under a sheet of aluminium foli.soon got sick of this and left it open.

Brian,

what model is your FOB? It is written on the back.
There have been several types released and some are better than others.

3TXA is the original early key fob fitted to vehicles up to 1998
3TXB is the replacement for the 3TXA introduced in 1998, they are not very good.
17TN is the latest key fob still in production, this will replace all of the above, it is backward compatible.

Cheers,
Branko

I've given up with alarms etc. and just leave the thing open. If someone really wanted to nick it they'd use a stanley knife on the hood anyway.
