MG MGF Technical - All these spooky noises

I'm getting the car on the lift tonight, and need some fault-finding advice:

There has developed a rattle on acceleration and on specific RPM (2500-3000). It's a 'hollow' sound, so I am fairly confident it is somewhere on the exahausts.

Which are the common cuprits?
* Flexipipe (the webbing has com of in one end, which i have fastened with a hose clamp)
* Heat-shield
* ... more?

More worrying, is that there is a change in sound whether i have the clutch down or not. There is a very sligt mechanical sound when the Neutral is in. Are you supposed to hear any difference? As a precaution, tonight I will change the gerbox oil to SMX-S...

cheers

Loose baffles in the back box?
Steve Ratledge

Hi Oskar,
before emptying the box,check the level and be surprised! IMO all cars were underfilled from the start.A good synthetic gearoil will fix the noise.
As for the sound,the "bracket-support down. WCU 100990" makes a lot of difference! Se Dieters site how to fit. Wölkes in Göteborg is a good supplier for this item.Comes complete with nuts and bolts at an afordable price for being a Rover item....
Also not uncommon for the exthaust strap to snap at the plain area where it mates with the catalyst. If you fit a new one it will be the same in due time,better to have someone weld a re-inforcement plate where the crack is.
For the flexipipe there can be a ned for more hose clamps, I have one at each end. / Carl.

Hmm. Maybe I should check the condition of the oil and if it is ok, only top up.

On the other hand, the oil is 7-8 years old, so changeing it now shouldn't hurt...

(SMX-S is about 10 punds a litre here)

The bracket support is this one, right?

Yes,that´s the one. Has more function than killing odd noises thou ,also a decent pick-up place for any forces that otherwise will be transformed to the head (plastic dowels!) if the exthaust hits a bump etc.

I did change the oils (engine and gearbox) last night.

As it turned out, the box was full when I probed it. However, I did replace the oil anyway, which seemed to be good.

There is actually less noise, in gear and also in neutral. If there is no other noise around the car, it is still possible to hear the difference between neutral and de-clutched, but i guess that is normal, right?

The biggest difference was in shifting though, it is clearly smoother, both warm and cold.

To get the oil in, i used a cheap oil pump of the 'syringe' model, which worked fine from standing right under the car.

Also, for filling the engine oil, i used a hose and a funnel, so i didnt need to open the hatch, this worked fine, but you need a fairly big hose, like a garden hose.

Oh, and the exhaust noise was from the flexipipe region.

When kocking ot it there is a sligt rattle on that seams to com from the inside (really?). However, tightening the steel net by releasing one of the hose clamps (I have two too), seems to have made it better.

What are the failure modes of the flexipipe? Is it always the outer cover that makes the noise.

The outer cover can go on making noises for ages until the inner portion cracks/breaks. This will generate noise with a capital N ! ;O)
If this happends one can still drive for some time with the flexitube wrapped in alu-foil secured with the clamps.Note it should be the thicker one for use in baking ovens.
There is a very similar flexi at Micro that will fit if welded in .Compared to the price of the original setup it is a huge saving. / Carl,
