MG MGF Technical - Another Glovebox?

I'm having problem with my front tyre at the mo, so I've got the spare on which restricts me to 50 mph. And it is because of this slow speed that as I was pootling along the A130 tonight (god it feels like i'm walking!) i was looking across at the interior of the car and I asked myself what was actually behind the blanking passenger airbag plate.

I'm sure i don't have a passenger airbag as all the plate is a plain plate. if it was an airbag in there i'm sure somewhere it would state SRS on the front(please inform me if I am wrong)

So it got me thinking, has anyone ever had this plate off and seen what actually is behind there and would the space be large enough to be another glove box?

I'm sure i could rig up a sort of door and hinge with an exisitng MGF door latch. please let me know

cheers

The EPAS ECU is behind there.

There is a strut directly behind it, so no cubby hole I'm afraid,

whilst there is a strengthening bar behind the blanking plate I have asked both Brown & Gammons and Mike Satur for a feasibility as to whether a cubby box like the Rover 25 could be made to fit the hole. (The blanking plate external dimensions just happen to be the same as the Rover 25 cubby box) Whilst both have reported that it cannot be done I wonder whether a vaccum moulding cubby box/trinket tray/spectacle tray could be made. I am sure there would be a demand for this.

BTW there are some chaps who have modified the strengthening bar to be the mount for camcorder's. C'mon Andy B show a photo as to what can be done behind a blanking plate.

Have a look yourself!

Simply remove the glovebox and push out the blank from behind, I would guess that there is only a little diffrence between the R25 space and the F space, you could get a R25 cubby and cut the rear quarter off (leaving enough back and bottom to act as reference points for 'levelness') then fill a bag with setting foam and fill the cubby in place, this should give you a good idea of the diffrence, then skim the excess foam off (to get level surfaces and then you can tell us with some certainty about the feasability! (my guess is not big enough for drinks, but good enough for shades/pens etc)

Fitting a R25 cubby in the airbag space is a non-starter, sorry Paul. I've looked at this, as indeed did Andy "SF" Phillips and Mike Satur at various times back 'in the early days'.

The problem is that there is literally only about 15mm clearance between the blanking panel and the cylindrical torsion bar across the car. There is about 15mm above and below this bar that is accessible - about the only thing you could use this space for is storage of one or two CD cases... :o( There IS loads of space behind that bracing bar, but the problem is accessibility.

The bar IS useful as a camera mount. But I'm stuggling to think of any other non-airbag uses you could use this area for... :o(

Frustrating eh?
