MG MGF Technical - Another red light on the dash!!!

Driving to work this morning and the steering felt really really light at anything over 35-40mph? Got out, had a look around, nothing untoward so off I went again.
Got to the motorway and it's still really sensitive, had a look down at the speedo to see just how fast I am going? 0 mph, ahh now that’s not right!!!
Am I right in thinking that the power-steering on an MGF is speed sensitive? And if so does the speedo control this?
Anyway, after about 5mins of feeling like I'm driving on ice the PAS light illuminated on the dash & the PAS has switched itself off. So now I have no PAS & no speedo?

Any ideas?

The speedo cable has a join under the bonnet behind the black plastic cover, my speedo stopped working recently when this had come loose. I packed the join with copper grease and pushed the two halves back together and all is working fine now, it even stopped the awkward bounce on the speedo needle that appeared at about 35 mph.

That may cure your lack of speedo but not sure about the EPAS are there any fuses for the EPAS system.

A huge fuse under the bonnet on the left side of the car, behind the battery, fixed to the inner wing under a translucent cover, marked 70A MAX.

Of course.

Unreliable speedo info will result in EPAS shutdown - ie if you have 2500rpm and 0mph, the epas will realise a speed info fault and will shutdown.

Fix your speedo indication defect, and your EPAS will start working next time you drive. Don't go fiddling around with fuses or steering column sensors.

There are a number or "break out" points for the speedo cable - including the back of the speedo - any one can give this trouble as could the failure of the cable itself.

The EPAS on my F used to switch off during the high idle emissions MOT test they used to do - 0mph and high revs!

However I'd say that the fact that the OP was going along the motorway before EPAS switched out is a good reason to pull the fuse until they can get it fixed. Safer to have it permanently off, rather than coming on and possibly being on at 40MPH IMHO.

Pull that fuse! 3000 RPM in 5th is approx 70mph (VVC gearing).

Thanks All,
Removing the fuse and then placing it back has given me PAS again albeit at very low revs. I couldn't find any loose connections throughout the length of the speedo cable though. It's being replaced in the morning along with the "cable driver"? Hopefully this will cure it, £182 squid DOH!!!
