MG MGF Technical - anti freeze consumption

hi, i have recently had to top up with 1 litre of anti freeze ,does this mean i have a leak somewhere and (deep breath) a potentional head gasket failure on the way .

After how long did you have to top up, and did you fill the expansion tank to halfway and NOT full.

Was the expansion tank totally empty or not. If so did you bleed the cooling system.

Keep an close look at the coolant.

Do you know if the radiator fan comes up in slow traffic?

well ,just checked the coolant level today as in cold engine ,and no bloody coolant at all ,presumably i will have to bleed the system now ,and more to the point where is it going ?

I'm afraid, looks like your car needs the head gasket to be done, if you can't spot coolant drops from leaking hoses under the car.

If it's an older MPi (120PS) then the inlet manifold gasket could have been _initial_ the reason.

Get it done sooner rather than later before it cooks the engine.

Well, I hope it is not an HGF Cliff - check to see whether there are any other leaks from the system - the radiator, the rubber hoses and the steel underbody coolant pipes can all result in coolant loss... But do get fixed before the problem gets worse.

And yes, you will need to bleed the coolant system now that the expansion tank has emptied.

I had the same problem - a litre of coolant a week, mechanic couldn't find the reason. Me fretting that another HGF was on the way. Eventually, turned out to just be leaking coolant pipes. Dunno why such a big loss was so hard to spot.
