MG MGF Technical - Anyone tried.....

spraying the centre console and air vent surrounds? I like the look of the sliver and other coloured interiors found in the Trophy models but I'm put off by the price for a replacent for the black plastic one in my y2000 'F'. Hence the spraying idea! Any advice greatly appreciated as always!
Rob

Dr Rob is considering the same.

There should be loads in the archives about this - I remember a number of people discussing (and doing) this over the last few years.

You really need to talk to Ed Clark about this. He's managed to spray his centre console silver - see http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/darkside/Eds_small.jpg

It takes an awful lot of patence though to get a good result.

I've picked up a set of face vents from the MGF Centre for 5 quid and am looking to modify these. I was thinking of painting the vains in the vents, but might just paint the direction control lever silver (ala Audi). We'll see.

If you want to buy a set of ready painted console and vents, then MGF Centre do these - but I'm not sure how much they are - do you remember Tim? Quality wise, they looked at least as good as official MG.

I'm thinking X-Power Grey for my centre console - to match the alcantara of my seats. :o)

Rob,

You could try taking them to a sprayshop, they're the sort of thing that could be done in a teabreak...for cash.

I'd just like to get rid of the 'old man' walnut on my console and vents - do you reckon the MGF centre will swap it for some younger and trendier black or summat.

Can't go silver cos it would look cack next to my cream leather.

i sprayed mine in a titanium silver, got a really good finish aswell. Problem is now that 4 months down the line it seems to be reacting with something. Strange because usually if there was a problem the reaction would take place straight away. Might have somethinhg to do with a cleaning product that ive used on it, i really dont know.

Cheapest option Buz is...

I assume you bought the car second hand? Timber is an optional extra and (unless it is from Mike Satur) is a 'stick on' kit. It should be possible to peel it off, maybe using a hairdryer to soften the adhesive. You will then need to clean up the original surface to remove all traces of the glue, not sure what to suggest here, normally white spirit or something would be appropriate but as the original surface is plastic there may be a reaction to the cleaning fluid. Once this is done you then have a choice, you can live with the new (old) surface finish - loads of other people find it acceptable, or proceed with a re-spray.

I doubt MGF Centre would do a 'straight swap', but i'm sure they would be very reasonable. Have a chat with Victoria and see what she says. Certainly this route is one of the best to obtain a professional finish.

SF <--- Who likes 'old man' walnut! :-)

Try WD40 instead of white sprit, although you will have to degresse it if you are planning on spraying later.

In fact it's not bad at all my former 2000 VVC was like that: oxford beige leather, beige dash, and silver vent surrounds + alloy door bits & gear lever. Looked the dog's balls (now where did I put those pictures)

So who's going to be the first to comment, then?
