MG MGF Technical - Arrrr the wonders of eBay

Hi there !

I bought a set of 4 VVC F alloys for £100 inc good tyres from eBay!!!

they are immaculate...very chuffed!

now the tricky ooeer bit!!
they all carry 205/50 R15 tyres, all pretty good mind but all the same!

My F has 185/55s on the front!

please dont tell me I have a set of 4 rear wheels!

Can I put these straight onto my 1996 F ? without worry?

Neil

All the wheels are the same, one of the variants came with the same rubber all round, can't remember which.

If you want the same as current then your local fitter can take the tyres off two of the rims and refit them when you run out of tread at the back
Will Munns

No problem Neil - I've run 205 all round for years (albeit 16"). Some people find a bit more tramlining, but personally I've never been troubled by it and I suspect part any such a problem is the usual tracking issue.
Dave Livingstone

I've looked in the rave cd, and

Yes you have rear tyres, the fronts should be 185/55 r15

But I expect you wont be the only one running the same all round, I bet some dickfit fitters look at one tyre and fit the same size all round.

Neil, yes you have a set for 4 rear wheels ;o) LOL

But as has already been said, the front and rear alloys are identical (same offset etc) - so are interchangeable.

I've used 205/50 R15s all round before (with Bridgestone S-02 rubber) - and they were absolutely fine, with some tramlining, but a good deal less than I do with the 215/45R16s I have now.

What tyres are on the wheels you've bought? Not NCT3s?
Rob Bell

Just to echo Rob's comments...

I ran with 205s all round for a while. All was fine... appart from the fact that I was inexperienced as the tyres were NCT3s. Bleurgh. ;-)

I'm confused, I thought the VVC F wheels were always 16". How have you got 15" VVC wheels?
David M

Until 1999, all MGF VVC wheels were of the 5-spoke, 15" design (well, except those fitted to special editions like the Abingdon). Only with the MY2000 model did the VVC come with 16" wheels as standard.

Hope that helps to clear up the confusion :o)
Rob Bell

If it's not already clear from previous comments, from 2000MY on, the VVC came with the same tyres all round. Your set is probably from a later model.

Yes - 215/40 R16s to fit 16" wheels - Neil has the 15" 5-spoke wheels - as shown here: http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/group1/facts_and_figures/mpi_v_vvc_images/VVC_alloy.gif

Yeah these are the ones

1999 eh? they look like 2004 !!! none of that scabbing that my originals are ...well ruined by!

there is one NCT3 on the set
but I am sure a few track days will see the end of it!
;¬)

there is a Hankook
8¬O~

and a couple of other Goodyears
:¬/

I have to say I liked my Toyos and there is some life left in them...just!

We'll see!

I think the toyos may be the ones for the track!
whatever we have a load of rubber now for whatever!

Neil

I hate to bring this up, but... isn't running different rubber on the same axle regarded as a *really bad* idea?
